The news about Escape from LA reminded me that a while back the Bits reported Escape from New York was on the way for 09. There is an import out there that is supposedly terrible and I was wondering if that was it, or was the original report referring to a Region 1 version (thats hopefully better) on the way? thanks

As reported on the 'bits just this afternoon: April.

I misread: theatrical release is April. Sorry for my poor re-reportage; I'm an excitable boy /cue_Zevon.

Of course no one expects Gone with the Wind to have cell phones, but we're talking about the 90% of movies that are sent in contemporary time periods and do not feature the kind of things that make them universal or long lived. There were what, 900 movies made last year? How many of those will be a marquee catalog title purchased in large numbers even 10 years from now? 5? And I think that's being generous. He also mentioned that the way people talked in the pre-method days is very different from what people are used to now, or were even used to in the 80s. Very stilted and proper, which is offputting to a lot of younger people.

there was 3:10 to Yuma but I think the reason for the fall of westerns is that not too long ago there where just too many that people had enough of them (yeah we know good guy in white hat shoots bad guy with black hat) I also think that political correcteness does not help (what white people shooting at those redcoats, stealing their land? tsk, tsk, tsk)

and I agree with you and I guess, even though I did not read it, the article.
Though I think there needs to be some qualifiers (which I don't know if they where inthe article). I think the disconnect happens when the time is too close but yet too far. Gladiators, mythic tales, cowboys.... are too far to feel a connection anyways. But let's face it, a kid watches a movie from the 80's about some yuppie with his fancy phone in the car as big as an arm, and if you don't completely understand that Cells where just starting and that was state of the art expensive and expensive to you and so a big status symbol the whole image is ruined.

Also with gladiators or westerns or movies that take place way in the past don't tend to have temporal references, right you don't look at the guy and say "he is the cool guy he has gun X while the other guy is down on his luck because he has a 5 year old model. Because no one in “todays market” will understand that. But they are all over the place if it is movie that takes place today.

3:10 to Yuma certainly wasn't the pulp western that Quick and the Dead or a white/blackhat one was Absolutely right that the brick/suitcase cell phone, when removed from the context of the period just looks weird

Store exclusive bundles like that rarely go through the channels I'm connected to.

The only update I'm aware of should be adding netflix, but that might be all server side

Am I reading into this too much? Jurassic Park has already shown up with a release date abroad for November. Are we saying it's now being pushed back into 2011 because Spielberg doesn't want it too close to Indiana Jones by Paramount?

That would be disappointing if true, but I also agree with you that I would take "man in the hat" over Jurassic Park. Raiders is my favorite movie of all time, though Jurassic Park is definitely in the top 25 as well. I have no problem buying them both!

This is one of those times when it's a pleasure that I'm not interested in either of them.

Where's Jaws?

With Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones all seemingly coming this year...I would bet we don't see Jaws until 2011.

No, I didn't say that. All I said is that it's a mistake for the same studio to push multiple franchise boxes for Christmas that target a similar demo

Well Jeff,

I finally decided to give Fallout 3 a second chance and boy am I glad I did. It moves at a slow pace at times and its often too easy to get slowed down exploring and trying to find items, but it is a lot of fun thus far.

I started Mass Effect as well and I liked it too.
