Hey Jeff,

JVC does indeed do polarized direct-view displays:

http://www.elitezoom.com/jvc-gd-463d...d-monitor.html

In fact, they used this polarized display when working on Avatar:

Quote:
The JVC GD-463D10E produces 3D images that can be seen using inexpensive polarized, passive glasses, the result of its integrated Xpol polarizing filter. Smirnoff said he prefers this passive approach because it avoids potential flicker and power issues associated with active shutter glasses.

And here's a link as of Jan 2010 stating they had plans to release such a set commercially:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/s...d-televisions/

Quote:
A part of 3D's assault on the home theater this year is a battle over which glasses technology each manufacturer will choose, and after locking up Sony RealD has announced its tech is coming alongside new displays from JVC and Samsung. While JVC's 3D LCDs will use circular polarized passive glasses (like the ones you've probably worn at the movies) Samsung is promising to work on both active shutter LCD and passive eyewear models -- no word yet on any Gucci tie-ins, but it's still early.

So has anyone confirmed if JVC is continuing with its plans to release this polarized set for the consumer market, or if anything has changed?

I was able to try out Sony's 3D setup at the Sony store last weekend. They had a 50ish inch tv setup with a PS3 running a 3D demo, it had motorstorm clips as well as some sports and what looked to be something along the lines of planet earth. It looked incredible. Its ashame that Sony isn't launching their tvs here in the states until late summer or fall.

Jeff,

Have you had a chance to check out Sony's setup yet? I would like to see what the pros and cons are of the two systems. I think Panasonic has some deal at Bestbuy right now where you can get a 50in plasma, blu player and 1 pair of glasses for pretty cheap. I don't know if I want to go that route or wait for the Sony 3D tv OR wait for Samsung to release theirs. I am a big samsung supporter.

If I am watching a movie that clearly shows film grain (which I do not mind at all), and I put it on "still" ("pause"), the film grain, like everything else that depends on the progression of film frames, should stand still, and it does -- it simply freezes. What is the correct name for the digital noise that keeps moving? And, I must admit, I'm not clear on what causes it. What does?

I was just running the DVD of William Wyler's The Collector (1965). It had plenty of film grain and that other stuff, but the big close-ups were sharp and finely detailed, with plenty of pores and facial lines showing ... which did not make Samantha Eggar look any worse -- just more human! She, in 1965, and Evangeline Lilly in 2010, on the broadcast version of Lost (who knows what the disks look like!) both look great with all the lines and pores showing. It would be a pity if some grain, scratch, dirt or damage cleaning up process hid those details. Once again, if the director and the d.p. shoot it that way, let's see it that way.

Almost nothing will get me hyped, least of all sequels, but I have to admit I'm getting pretty damn hyped for Tron Legacy.

Bring it!

That's PWM noise (or dithering noise or whatever it is) from your display, not the disc. I know plasmas suffer from it, I think DLPs do as well.

Jeff,

I know u said you felt the God of War games were overrated, but I VERY much encourage you to check out the 3rd one. It truly brings a new meaning to what epic means. The boss battles are just beyond amazing.

Ok so whats the official word on Paramount and the remaster of Italian Job?

http://www.google.com/search?q=Itali...ient=firefox-a

Appears a simple cover art revamp was made into a new remaster and now since no one has bothered to inform the members of these communities out there we now have members here complaining that its not remastered.

What a mess this has made

No, but I wouldn't suggest you buy anything made by Vizio either.

Problem is that people made assumptions. A lot of Paramount discs just got butt ugly new cover art so get the good stuff while you can

Jeff (or anyone qualified to answer),

I know this isnt a tech support thread, but I always get the best answers to questions here!

It appears that my Onkyo 606 and PS3 Slim have some annoying handshaking issues and I am thinking about replacing the receiver.

What brand and model do you recommend? I need a model that is in the power range of this model with a minimum of 4 HDMI slots, but I dont need a lot of juice since this receiver will be in my bedroom and wont go at a very high volume.

No, its just that half the time it doesnt recognize my PS3 slim signal and the only way to get it work is to hold down the PS3 power button so that the video settings reset back down to 480i. Once I get back in the dashboard I set back to 1080p and all is good. Thats the only way I can get it to work. It doesnt happen all the time, but enough to be annoying.

My 805 does that now and again, I switch to another HDMI output and back again and then it comes up. Try it next time it does it but yeah annoying bug.
