I wonder how many of these demands come from the actors, and not their agents, producers, etc. Lauren Hutton has been making the rounds on TV promoting her new movie (The Joneses ????), and, at least in the interviews, they are often letting the wrinkles on this former supermodel's face show. She said she begs (still) photographers not to retouch, but they do it anyway. Someone said, "Even if you ask?" Whoopie Goldberg said, "You can ask, but they ignore you."

this is an interesting point though-- with the clarity of hidef, I could see where actors would be self-conscious about their appearance-- with deliberate softening of the picture, maybe some DNR complaints of the past are without merit?

There are several major performers that have their digital facials in their contracts. See if you can spot them

2 of them come to mind-- Cameron Diaz and Milla Jovavich-- ??

I've noticed in several films that close-ups are always soft...

It's generally pretty obvious when "digital makeup" is applied, since it's selectively targeted at faces. Johnny Depp had plenty of that going on in Sweeney Todd, many chick-flick type movies seem to use it liberally too.

With digital post-production, many complaints are without merit since the use of any such technique is perfectly valid. But before DNR all you had was makeup, photo filters, and flattering cinematography.

If we want detailed images on the screens of our Home Theaters (my reason for going to Blu-ray), maybe we should appeal to actors and other film people who are also amateur photographers -- they can appreciate what fine lenses, even after filtering through 1080, can do. So who are the modern photo hobby people who would be the equivalent of yesteryear's Yul Brynner, Roddy McDowell, and Walt "Tell them not to use that soft lens on me -- it makes me look out of focus" Disney?

Catherine Zeta-Jones in The Mask of Zorro. Zero detail, texture, wrinkles or blemishes. She "glowed". Yet Banderas and Hopkins were sharp as a tack including whiskers, scars and poors.

Why do I feel like we've gone down this path once too many times already?

I don't think the tech was ready yet in 1998.

It's more than likely lighting and makeup. Besides, even in "real life" she looks great, especially in the 90's.

Any idea how many units the LotR BDs moved? Im curious.

If it did well Im hoping it might persuade Fox to release the Alien Quad in 3rdQ instead of 4th qtr this year.
