Lighting is a possibility, especially if they came up withe a better Ober. In the old days of Hollywood they created a special light to aim at the face of Merle Oberon to hide lines and other skin texture. They called this lamp the Ober, and it was used quite often; I think the name stuck and softening lights that were not made for Oberon were called by that name.. I think they may have used an Ober on Loretta Young and Claudette Colbert.

I was under the impression that the use of Obers and other such devices declined in the '50s when high resolution formats like VistaVision and 70 mm came in, because it became too obvious who was getting the Ober and who was not. Sometimes they would cut back and forth between shots of two individuals, and one would be very sharp, and one unrealistically soft. Make-up was better, because you didn't risk blurring up the necklace if the light reached too low.

Not always. In the 1960s TV series "Green Acres", the "Ober" was used extensively with the two leads - Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor.

That wasn't DNR, but instead the same CGI de-aging done on X3 and Benjamin Button.

I've noticed in several films that close-ups are always soft...
Milla Jovovich in "Resident evil 3" is a VERY obvious case.
I remember when I watched "The invasion", before I even remotely suspected DI-s were being used for such purposes, it seemed to me Nicole Kidman was looking very wrinkle-free and perfect-skinned... She has some huge close-ups in the movie, and I think it was very well done (the digital make-up job).

If you want to see DNR in the theater, then look no farther than KickAss. Virtually every character, including the teenagers has been wiped (nick cage will be the most noticeable)

Ah! Well, it looked horrible in comparison to its use in those films. He didn't look de-aged as much as he looked like an artificial lifeform.

that's the exact example I was referring to-- when I saw that movie on blu I was like but then I studied the picture and the softness was only during close-ups of her.... you would think somebody that young wouldn't need all the filtering!

Not meaning to change the subject, but I thought Bill Hunt's comments and article links about Tombstone (in light of its upcoming Blu-ray release) were interesting. Tombstone isn't one of my all time favorite movies, but I do like the movie quite a bit and think it arguably has the best on-screen performance from Val Kilmer. I hope Disney has done a great job on authoring this movie onto Blu-ray.

Anyway, along the lines of Bill's comments about the movie's production being something of a state of turmoil, I keenly remember reading articles (in Premiere, I think) about Kurt Russell raising hell about how awful the movie was. The first time I saw Tombstone I was thinking, "I don't know what the hell Kurt is thinking, this show is actually pretty good!" I didn't know Russell actually got involved and supervised a re-edit of the film.

Bobby,

I agree about Val Kilmer's performance...he should have received an Oscar nod for it..."I'll be your huckleberry..."

You guys who heart their Macbooks & iStuff keep this in mind:

http://www.9to5mac.com/Steve-Jobs-BluRay-3490436

If it were up to your hero, BD wouldn't exist ("a bag of hurt"). At least MS added official support with Vista SP1.

I hope a bunch of people are going to realize over this that the greatest trick Jobs ever pulled was convincing people Bill Gates was the bad one.

You want Blu-ray? Buy a PC and stop waiting on him. Better yet, send a picture of your new PC to Stevie and tell him that since you want Blu-ray, you're a PC.

(and no, running WinXP on your MacBook does not send a message)

No kidding. Say all you want about Microsofts tactics in the open market (ahem format war), but at least Bill Gates does good things with his money. He has given a LOT to charitable causes. Jobs isn't known for his charity and yet he is adored by the media.

Jeff,

Im surprised about the lack of Star Wars comments in this thread in regard to the "huge" news breaking this weekend.

Many people are hoping that they will include the original cuts of the original trilogy. Perhaps its a good idea to dispel that hope again.

I wish they would release them THIS year since it will be the 30th anniversary of Empire Strikes Back.

Any further comments on this?

Consider that hope dispeled as of 2 months ago. It CAN change. But I seriously doubt it ever will.

Sansweet talking about Star Wars on Blu-ray is the very definition of a non-event. The same 'news' came out last year. Whoopdedoo!

I'm not surprised. People have been through this with Lucasfilm so much that people are getting rather tired of it. I've taken a "I'll believe it when I see it" approach.

And, with most Lucasfilm releases, there will be something screwed up for people to complain about. Whether it's "They didn't fix the EE of The Phantom Menace" or "The lightsabers are pink" or "FILL IN THE BLANK".

Am I excited? Yes. Is it going to be overhyped? Yes. Will I buy it? Yes. At the end of the day, I've seen the movies 100x each. I'll watch them in HD when they come out and they'll probably go back to sitting on the shelf like the DVDs did...
