I don't think it really points to anything in particular. Titles go out of stock and are reissued all the time, often just with new cover art.

Once Paramount and/or Universal does make an announcement, do you think we will see titles immediatly or have the 1-2 month window?

Default Your Network Comments on todays post

I could not agree more, the big boys ran me off once to "cable/DBS" and are more or less going that way again,

I found your X-Files comments of interest as I have seven years of that show on DVD box sets, but not at all interested in years 8 and 9 as it was clear they were milking the show for all it was worth at that point, typical network activities.

Anyway thanks for your comments on this matter. Have a great day.

Noticed in your post today you said Finding Nemo is planned for 2009. That is disappointing since Disney said Nemo would be one of their major "tent-pole" titles for 2008. Was there any major reason for this delay? Will it be replaced with another major title for the summer?

I had read that too, sometime near the end of last year. I thought they said the first half of 2008.

yes it is dissapointing that Nemo is a 2009 release.. i to had seen reference to a fall 2008 release..

its also a little disheartening that there seems to be a view permeating that 2008 is going to be a slow year for Blue Ray.. with things really kicking off in 2009.. i've read lots of references to the flood gates opening after the holidays etc..

thats almost a whole 12 months away

Slow...maybe in comparison to next year, but soon enough we won't be able to buy all of the movies that we want. Sorry to be so selfish though guys...I guess I need it a little slow until my wife finishes school and gets a job in the next few months.

Bill,

Someone has probably made mention of this already in this thread, but even so I feel it bears repeating after seeing that Batman: The Movie has a $39.98/$59.98 MRSP that Fox's catalog pricing structure is seriously out-of-whack. It didn't seem that long after this film was released on DVD that it could be found at Target for $5.50, so, even if there are new extras and those extras are in HD, how many people are going to easily lay down $27.95 for this release?

I understand that the studios are desperately trying to recoup their margins and not devalue their product, but there seems to be such a wide disparity between catalog pricing by Fox and Warner Bros that if some consistency isn't achieved Blu-ray Disc will struggle to get traction with the general public. Someone at Fox is clearly lacking in imagination if the think all catalog releases are created equal.

No matter what you think about the movie, a TON of work is going into the Blu-ray. Maybe you should reserve judgment on this particular title until it's released.

It's still 40 bucks at MSRP! If we want the masses to buy into Blu-ray then Fox and to a lesser degree Disney need to make their catalogue titles priced in a way that makes them more appealing to such consumers.

Maybe I should, but Fox has already decided to price this title in such a way that I'll never be able to pass judgment on it from personal experience until there is a price drop or a sale or I rent it.

Honestly, it isn't my fault that Fox wants to pour that much time and effort into such a marginal title (and, yes, I know that that is my opinion, but I think you'll find I am not alone in that sentiment). No amount of bells and whistles will change the fact that I buy a movie for the movie first and foremost.

More work than what WB put into their multi-disc BD release of Blade Runner which was priced under $30?

I have no doubt that a lot of hard work is going into it, but when literally EVERY other studio producing Blu-Ray content prices their catalog titles at an MSRP of $29.99, how can anyone justify purchasing it or any other Fox catalog title?

Bill, has Fox seen less catalog sales than the other studios, or are there enough people bending over and taking it, and thus encouraging Fox to prolong this pricing policy?

Hear hear!

Stupid network execs are killing network TV. I hope the shareholders are sleeping well paying these bozos so much.

Isn't this the HD DVD argument all over again?

Just because some company is willing to release something expensive at a cheap price, it shouldn't mean that it instantly lowers the value of everyone else's offering.

You're right, but Fox/MGM is alone in charging that much for their catalogue releases. Shouldn't they be more competitively priced if they want to sell more product and grow the Blu-ray market?

Are you privy to how well their sales are progressing vs. other studios? Maybe they are moving enough units to continue this price point. Maybe they are working on things behind the scenes and will move their price.. The beauty of a free market is, if you think its too expensive....don't buy it. If you want to send a message, that's how you do it...

Not to get off of blu-ray discussion, but Bill, do you think there is a situation that would make the networks rethink their approach to television shows? Your point about them chasing the next great reality show and that X-Files would never last today are spot on! It's just a sad affair at the moment and many, many people don't like it (and following my point above, are turning off network tv and going elsewhere)
