Sorry I don't have any further info on Kubrick. We're a LONG way back right now

I'd like to express my sadness at the passing of Satoshi Kon, people here will know him as the director of Perfect Blue and Paprika. He was working with my good friends at MadHouse studios in Japan on a new movie when he passed at a very young 47. My condolences to his family and friends. I'm sorry I don't have information on what will happen to his film or how far along it was in production, they probably don't even know yet.

Yikes! 47 is awfully young. RIP

Second, creating an original version can be done with a bit of thought and effort. If it's desired, why not just do it? There is no need to dupe old prints.

There are no overriding technical problems here. The owner seems desirous of having only the newer versions in distribution, and that is his prerogative.

RAH
Yes, this is exactly right. There's no reason why the original theatrical versions of these films can't be released on Blu-ray at moderate cost to Lucsafilm. It's simply that Lucas doesn't want them in circulation on Blu-ray. Period. He doesn't like them as they were, and he doesn't want them out there.

Far as I know it's still on. They don't even have December on their retail/media site yet.
Yes, my current information is that Fantasia is still on.

I see that The Score (Brando, DeNiro, Norton) is listed on Best Buy's website for 8/31. I'm assuming this is another quiet Best Buy exclusive?

On another note, it appears that old enemy Toshiba is planning on releasing 3D TVs that do NOT require the use of glasses!!

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/...100418018.html

To me this seems like a big step forward towards getting 3D TVs in homes.

It doesn't work past about 23", that's why no one else is doing it.

It's like the OLED TVs, the tech isn't ready for primetime in large panels yet. Good stuff, but until they can ship a 50" at around the same price, people aren't going to be interested

Well, at least they're going down the road that may get them there. It'll be an important step, if and when.

What has happened to OLED TVs. They haven't been talked about in ages. Now LED seems to be the thing.

I have a Samsung LED TV and its freakin NICE.

Aren't LED TVs really just LCDs with a fancy name?

Is the technology different than Philips' multi-view display that they were selling/were going to sell quite a while ago? If so in what way is it different?

OLEDs, they need to be able to make them in large enough quantities cheap enough. They'll eventually replace LCDs

LED TVs are LED backlit LCDs, which produces purer colors and allows for sectored backlighting for better contrast because it can totally turn off the backlighting if necessary. If you're buying LCD it's worth the extra money if you can spare it.

I agree. I went back to my old LCD and it now looks horrible in terms of black level compared to my current LED.

The only area where it still lags behind plasma is viewing angle.

That is pretty cool. Put a smile on my face - the waltzing part. Conversely, I had no idea Christiane's had such a difficult go of it since he passed.

Any idea what happened to Dumbo and if/when that will ever get released in the states?

I know this is a pretty impossible request, but have you heard even a rumbling that if/when they do the Kubrick set that they'll include the LIFE IN PICTURES disc? It'd be sweet if they caved and put on (even if crap quality) the Day of the Fight film as well.

I mean, things like this don't deserve to ONLY be on Youtube.

Oh, and I was rumbling about it in P's thread, but I just sold off my Kwai in anticipation of the BD, and it included some decent doc materials that I haven't once seen mentioned on any official release, mind digging in to see what you can find out, and whether I should try to get that disc set back?

Not at the moment, I'm afraid. I'll try to find out, but my guess is it was just delayed until 2011.

That IS a little bit early to investigate Kubick, I'm afraid, but I'll keep my ears open. My advice on Kwai... I make it a policy never to sell a DVD until the BD is in my hands. We'll see when the official press release circulates. But that's just me.

Dumbo had the issue of too many things on the plate at once. Remember that Blu is not selling the way that Disney'd like overall, and Princess and the Frog only did OK theatrically, so rather than have Frog and Dumbo cannibalize each other, they moved Dumbo away. Disney movies typically come out in the fall in Europe and Asia, so Dumbo wasn't competing there

If you want it now, it's pretty easily importable. Last I checked on it, it was pencil'd in for next spring
