They're never going to do a replacement program for Ponyo then, I take it?
Not likely, no

Hey Jeff,

not sure if you have much contact with the Disney boys, but they just released Bambi with lossy-only audio. Sigh.

We've got to nip this in the bud before the studios start to assume that only "new soundtracks" can benefit from lossless presentation...

People should be educated on the benefits of audio fidelity as well. I see lots of people on these forums even telling me it simply wouldn't make a difference. It certainly would, probably for many people too.

On Bambi I really don't know how much gain there would be between the HR and Master. All the animated stuff from back then really is pretty low fidelity on the master tape.

THAT SAID

All the literature says DTS MA. I have sent an email

BUT PLEASE NOTE

The Oracle on these such things, barring a tragedy like Tron not being good, is in short supply. I'm going to be in Japan for 3 weeks, some of which will hypothetically be the first thing I can call a vacation in about 3 years (Kusatsu hot springs, relaxation ) Basically between wrangling about 15 meetings I know about, and probably another dozen that will materialize, moving 8 people around Tokyo, etc. I'm going to try to shift into a bit of low gear. You can keep asking stuff, but just know that I may not get to everything, please understand that my ability to devote time to research is going to be much lower. I promise I'll read it all, but ability to answer is going to be constrained

I find it rather distressing that Disney sees no need to rectify a defective release such as this I guess they don't have to care since it's not one of "their" movies, but still it's bad form...

Well, it's not defective. A defect implies it wasn't manufactured properly. It WAS manufactured properly, but contained an omission.

If you want Ponyo in lossless (and progressive), you're going to have to import it from Japan, unfortunately.

Manufacturing something "correctly" to the wrong specification is a defect, if you ask me... but try telling that to someone who only cares about the bottom line and not the quality of the product itself.

Disney's spec is English lossless, dubs in Dolby. The spec was followed. The problem is that people who are responsible for prepping the materials, they're just pulling tapes guys. Obviously someone should have made sure that Ponyo had lossless on the Japanese track, and the HK films before it. But don't chalk it up to greed. It was an honest mistake, and they fixed it on the next Ghibli release

Well, I hope they do fix Bambi. It would be my first non-lossless Disney title, and the fact that it's a Diamond Edition only adds salt to the wound.

I should clarify that I don't expect to be back in full gear until the second week of April. I have to front load a lot of work that won't be getting done while i"m gone

And hypothetically that will include my Nausicaa review

The degredation of lossy compression is just as real with low-fidelity source material as it is with high-fidelity source material, and one reason why those of us who enjoyed PCM on laserdisc with classic/vintage films are so hopeful that Blu-ray will finally bring an end to our "laserdiscs still sounding better" than the latest and greatest digital media.

agree, I don't understand the idea of it is not great so let's make it worst. In a perfect world everything will be lossless.
