I LOVE the Wood Paneling. It is so "in".

Bit of retro, I remember seeing the original "Clash of the Titans" for the first time on a neighbor's LaserDisc player! It was like holding a rainbow in your hands -- the size of an LP Record!

LOL

Jeff, is there any way to know which anime tv-series were natively produced in high-def?

There is nothing on Imdb's "technical specas" for these shows, and many times blu-ray reviews don't mention it. Some data-base websites dedicated to anime that I've checked don't say a thing about his technical issues either.

My budget is limited and I don't want to buy upscaled content for the moment (especially if I already own the dvd-s). I'm guessing everything digitally produced prior to 2007 is standard-def. There are so many titles coming up on blu-ray, I'd like to find some way to know.

Thanks, and glad you're back safe and sound, and that the trip was productive.

Hey Jeff - haven't been on the thread in several days, but I just wanted to say welcome back. I hope your trip to Japan, despite everything, still proved fruitful for you.

That's a tricky question

Many series have HD masters, but they are not necessarily HD elements in there, so they're natively upscaled in the production process

They don't make these things public for obvious reasons, but anything from the last couple years should have been mastered for HD. How "high def" the source elements are vary from show to show, episode to episode or even scene to scene depending on the production team, the property and the budget. A weekly show like Naruto can have 5-6 teams working on it at any one time too

Still really hoping Robotech gets the HD treatment but I doubt it will happen so will probably be getting the protoculture set soon.

Shin wanted to do the Macross DVDs in HD, but the budget wasn't there

I believe Bandai has re transferred Macross in HD, but the other 2 shows getting HD treatment is unlikely. And getting resources shared is....problematic legally to say the least. The Tobey MacGuire movie is apparently still on as of 2 weeks ago though, take that as you will

I'd be happy if all it means is the protoculture set finally gets a release with subtitles, which again I know is unlikely. I'd even settle for Macross alone on blu-ray, it's my favourite of the 3 series, I can always get Southern Cross and Mospeada on DVD anyway.

Just don't be too disappointed when you finally see the Krypton opening to Returns. While I love the film, it really felt stylistically out of place for me, despite there being some killer elements. Essentially it felt like Bryan Singer stepped out and the ghost of Kubrick snuck in
I am just glad to see it. Its like seeing the coccooned Burke scene for the first time. The scene itself isnt that great but it was great to see after years of hearing about it.

As for being Kubrick influenced well that would suck. Kubrick has his fans, but I am not one of them. DOnt like a single film of his.

Yes, there's a Japanese Macross DVD release sourced from an HD master (made several years ago, now).

As for Robotech, that abomination needs to die, yesterday.

Talking about Macross, wonder what the chances of seeing the excellent Macross Frontier TV series on Blu Ray in the US are... Probably null, seeing as it seems to be having the same treatment as Macross 7. /cry
Maybe the 2 movies?
One can hope. Sometimes.

I still don't see why Robotech is so hated, it has 3 of the better anime series I've seen, not to mention it's often credited with introducing anime to the United States.

I feel eternally indebted to it for it's positive impact in the US, but it's really not 3 of the better anime series you've seen; it's a hack-job of 3 of the better anime series you've seen. The original series, uncut and properly translated, are much better and deserve to be presented and perpetuated the way they were originally intended to be seen. The only reason they were strapped together to become "Robotech" is the quantity of episodes required to constitute a salable tv syndication package at the time.

Zero. Harmony Golds supposed legal claim to anything and everything called Macross aside, the series has a similar issue in Japan between it's rights holders. So unless things drastically change on one side of the pond, zero, and then it goes up to nil

Welcome back, Jeff, glad you had a safe trip.

Any idea yet if the Fleischer shorts or the George Reeves movie are in HD?

I realize they are not exactly the same and the amount of extras are way different, but how is it that Warner was able to keep the Superman set all on BDs but they couldnt do the same for the MUCH more popular LotR EE box set?
