I think it sucks - I agree - but I think it comes down to Disney.
They need to figure out something as online sales are rising every year. I think it's a missed opportunity.

I never heard any informed response about the first three Indiana Jones movies coming to BD. At one point it was said that it was going to happen. Now there's nothing about it.

When Disney offers up one of their discount coupons, why is Amazon always excluded? It's always in-store only coupons. Does Disney not realize people buy BDs online? I usually email Amazon about those offers and always get the canned "we don't pm offers" responses. It just doesn't make sense, on both ends. For Disney, the discount shouldn't be limited to Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc. And for Amazon, why wouldn't you match that $10 off coupon? When Amazon denies these requests, they are saying "no, we would rather you go to Best Buy instead."
They aren't. Often there are seperate or equivalent deals offer through amazon. The $5 off Tron coupon was active if you pre-ordered in the first week, and they'll often have a "buy 2, save $10" offer.

The point of the coupons is to get you into the store, where hopefully you will be inclinded to buy other merchandise, preferably Disney of course. Amazon won't match it because unlike the retailer, they will not be reimursed that $10.

Are you able to elaborate at all?

Also, is there any speculation as to when we'll see Castle in the Sky and My Neighbors the Yamadas in the US? Thanks!
All I'll say is that it's not Totoro

All Ghibli titles are going to be on a 6-9 month delay to protect the home market.

It was on the schedule for this year, then they decided to do Star Wars instead to pimp the 3D re-releases.

Unexpected, huh? That only leaves a couple movies then. I wouldn't mind Porco Rosso; I rather enjoyed it, even if it's not the most popular film of his.

I just hope that it's not Howl's Moving Castle. That movie is by far Miyazaki's worst (even Ebert called it a "disappointment", and he's a huge fan of Miyazaki.) We know why it became a train wreck, but it doesn't excuse it from being as such.

Porco is my favorite Miyazaki movie, and the very LAST clue, it's not that either I actually own a bunch of cells from it

It's not the biggest favorite of mine, but I have very fond memories of seeing it the week it opened in Japan.

Well, sad to hear Indy keeps getting pushed back, but at least in this case it's understandable given they are releasing the 6 Star Wars movies.

Hopefully, we still get something Spielberg this year...like the one with big reptiles...

I think it will be fine. I also seem to remember (and I'm not sure if it was Jeff or not) someone saying that special care was being taken with the first movie. I cannot find it now, but there was talk of a new master as the old one used was soft and a bit washed out.

I guess we'll see what happens. The Indy thing is annoying. I remember they said they pulled it the year Crystal Skull came out because they weren't happy with the way they looked. Last year it got pulled. This year we get Star Wars. Next year in 2012 they'll hold it back for some sort of marketing tie in with Indy 5, which I suspect will release in 2013. Oh well.

There were some small bits of Jurassic Park featured in the Pixar Story documentary, and while I don't know how old the master was they used for it, it still looked incredible.

Well, it "held up" on a 100 foot screen theatrically.

I don't think we have to worry.

Do you think for Jurassic Park they'll give us a DTS Master Audio mix with the overcooked bass that we all know and love! Remember the outrage back in the day re: the DTS DVD?

I am sure Jeff is doing his best to delay this one, which is why he hasn't commented yet.

What would be really unexpected would be if it was Grave of the Fireflies, seeing as though Disney doesn't own (or didn't own up to this point) the rights for North American home video release.

Either that or Only Yesterday, which, according to Wikipedia, is "the only theatrical Studio Ghibli feature not yet released on home video in the United States or Canada." Also, I think up to this point, Ocean Waves has never been released in the US either, and is available as an import only.

Again, these would be really unexpected releases; it's probably more along the lines of a film that was already released in the US but wouldn't be everyone's guess as a "crowd favorite."

I'd be happy with pretty much any title, though!

You're right, Jeff, I did not expect Whisper of the Heart. While I do like that film, I wonder if Ghibli selected it to be next because they're afraid of burning through their top-tier classics (and thus future cash flow) too quickly...

Actually the DTS DVD's bass was undercooked, they had a replacement program for them. The DTS LD was overcooked. Both the DVD & LD DD tracks were at the proper levels.

Excellent find, thanks for sharing! I'm still working my way through the Ghibli collection for the first time, trying to view the films in order if I can. Luckily, my local library system has most, if not all of the films available to borrow. I've also already added Ponyo and Nausicaä to my Blu-ray collection.

I haven't seen Whisper of the Heart yet, but will definitely check it out in anticipation of an eventual US release.

I have yet to be disappointed with a Studio Ghibli film, so I am looking forward to the future and more releases on Blu-ray.
