I bought into that Monster cable junk and found out later that I did'nt have to spend $120 on a HDMI cable. I bought 2 Velocity 6 1/2 feet HDMI cables both for $11.99 each from AMAZON and they work just as good as the Monster HDMI cable.

I bought HDMI 1.3a Catagory 2 compliant HDMI cables from MonoPrice.com and paid $ 5.50 for a 1m Interconnect and $ 7.50 for a 3m Interconnect.

Lots of what has been said above is a little too technical for me and I would have no real way of arguing one way or the other. Having been a music lover , hi fi nut long before I got a home cinema I do have some experience of the argument cable sound different.
The way I dealt with it over audio was to borrow some cable from a dealer try them in my system and listen . If I could detect an improvement (not just a difference) then I had to decide was that improvement worth the cost. With HDMI cable I have taken a similar stance get a loan of a cable be it , Quad , Chord , Kimber , Monster etc and try it. Can I see any difference ? Can I hear any difference ? In all cases with regard to the picture my answer is currently no I see no real difference in picture sharpness, colour , contrast. There was a marginal sound improvement using the chord cable but nothing to get too excited about. So currently for me I would say use a good standard cable nothing more and connect it up then forget about . |

Sorry guys, but I got lost in all that good, but very detailed discussion, so hopefully someone can answer my 2 more simple questions...
![]() I have the Panny BD30 Blu-ray, and will (shortly) have a receiver that supports TrueHD and DTS Master HD, although my TV only supports up to 1080i. My 1st question is, do the components (BR disc player, receiver, and TV) all need to support HDMI 1.3a, or is it strictly a cable issue (i.e. all cableing needs to be 1.3a)? 2nd, will a 1.3a Cat 2 (high-speed) cable work with my 1080i TV? I heard that Cat 2 has a transfer rate much higher than needed for 1080i, but if it'll work now (with my 1080i), and later should I upgrade my TV to 1080p, then isn't it worth it to get the Cat 2 cable? Appreciate the help... |

Simply think of HDMI as a 'highway' and the more traffic on that highway, the wider the highway. Being that HDMI 1.3a Catagory 2 Interconnects are backwards compatable, why would you select anything else? All my HDMI interconnects are HDMI 1.3a Catagory 2 complaint as is my Panasonic DMP-BD-30, my Sony Strda-4300 ES Receiver, and my Sony 60" XBR. A marriage made in Heaven !!! [Jim]

lol yes and no.
high speed devices (hdmi 1.3a) MUST be connected by appropriate cable(hdmi 1.3a cat2 compliant). Cable marking just shows if cable meets those requirements. AND of course better cable is back compatible with 'old n slow' (non 1.3a) devices. ![]() |

So, it sounds like with 1.3a Cat 2 cables all around, I should be able to enjoy True HD audio (from the Panny BRD through the receiver), but not any advanced video features on my TV (i.e. no "Deep Color" or higher resolutions). Correct? ------------------- From Monoprice: "At 1.3 they doubled the throughput in order to support new upcoming features like higher resolutions, deep color, new multi-channel audio formats, etc. So 1.3 cables are required for transmitting this additional data. However, since HDMI versions remain backward and forward compatible, you can still use HDMI devices and cables of differing versions with each other." |

Thanks for the help!
![]() So for the recent Monster HDMI cable I bought from BB for ~$90 that I'll be returning, I ordered 3 new 1.3a Cat 2 compliant HDMIs from MP, and will have enough left over for 2 new BR discs. Sweet! ![]() |

Monster cables are the most overpriced cables you will find anywhere...HDMI is digital so you either get the connection or you don't...if you want good quality cables at a great price go to bluejeanscable.com

I have the Onkyo 605, PS3, Motorolla PVR, Klipsch all round and a Samsung 1080i LCD.
One of the HDMI cables is a good 2 years old...it's a monster cable (would not pay that price for a cable again) The other 2 I got about 6 months ago for around $35 each. I am not sure if any of theses cables are 1.3 (pretty sure the monster isn't) Would it be wise to use HDMI 1.3 with this setup? Is there anyway to find out if th 2 most recently bought cables are 1.3? ![]() Thanks |

you would have to get the cables tested and that wouldn't be worth seeing if they are 1.3...and if you want to get 1.3 cables visit bluejeanscable.com they have HDMI cables that are very cheap and still great quality...could get 3 of them for probably under $30 shipped... |

I'm thinking you would get a better colors but if you aren't sure if you want to spend the money on replacing all your cables...go out and buy one cable...see if you like it and if you do replace the others...

Which one would I replace...PS3>Onkyo
PVR>Onkyo Onkyo>LCD. I'm thinking that I would have to change at least 2 (PS3>Onkyo & Onkyo>LCD) to see a difference...probably wrong ![]() Could I be losing out on sound quality with the older version HDMI cables? Last edited by 1878; 03-02-2008 at 06:44 PM. |
