Is it true that there are some HDMI cables that are "1.3" and some are not? I was told that non-1.3 HDMI cables cannot carry 1080p signal.

Monoprice converter here. Returned my two $49 each HDMI cables (1 bought at Sears and 1 at Wal Mart) and just ordered on line and bought $10 worth (that's 2 6' feet HDMI from Monoprice) of cables. Works as good if not better.

Reason I'm asking is that the "cheap" HDMI cable I bought seems not capable of passing a 1080p signal from my DVD player ( upscale 1080p ) to my new 1080p capable plasma. It will flicker non-stop. However 1080i is fine so should not be a cable fault, or could it be?

There's much more bandwidth being used when 1080p is streamed.

I always have to laugh when people think quality HDMI cables are somehow overpriced...pay over $2k for a TV, over $400 for a BD player (+ discs) and throw a fit over a $60 cable. It will be interesting to see how long these cables last without falling apart over the next decade.

Wish I had my camera phone when I inspected several setups where the cable split apart at the connector. Or the speckle snowstorm on the TV. Or the "no signal" message after a few min of playback...

Default Am I better off with a heavier gauge Monoprice???

I notice crackinhedz typically posts a link to the 28AWG Monoprice HDMI cable. Buy if I'm willing to pay the higher price, am I better off going with a higher gauge Monoprice HDMI cable because fo this...

"Question: What are ferrite cores? Why are they only on the 28AWG cables?

Answer: Ferrite cores are the cylindrical fixtures placed near the connectors to filter noise and high frequency interference.

The size of the ferrite need to be in proportion to the diameter of the cable in order to be effective. At 28AWG they are similar in size to the HDMI connector heads. On thicker gauges they would be significantly larger than the connector. Since the spacing between connections on the back of a device are based on the dimensions of the connectors being used, the ferrites would make connecting any other cable very difficult. The ferrites become unwielding and cumbersome so they have not been included on our heavier gauges. In general, the benefit of heavier gauge outweigh the benefit of the ferrites."

If you notice, I usually only link to the 3ft-6ft for the 28awg. Why? because hdmi cables at that length from any brand is more than likely to work. Now consider at 6ft and under, that you do use a 24awg cable. Myself can tell you...its a pretty thick and stiff cable. Not much flexibility. Which could be a problem in some setups...so in general I just recommend the thinner cable to first time customers...and yes with ferrite cores

why? ...because they work.

Anything over 6ft and I would say yes, get a thicker cable.

Anyone with questions about various HDMI issues should really check the following site:

http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articl...nformation.htm

It's a very concise summation of many HDMI issues and answers. I've posted it before in a sticky thread but the A/V sections of this site have grown so much over the last three months that it seems to have disappeared.

All that matters is what's on the end of the cable. I have two that I bought for less than 10 bucks each from an eBay store. New too.

They're almost perfunctory.

Everybody could be cool like me and get a mid-priced cable instead of a 5$ Monoprice or a 120$ Monster. Mine was $60 and it pwnz0rz.

the one thing i really hate about HDMI is that the connector is crappy. it feels loose and ready to fall out of the port half the time.

Generally speaking, ferrite cores are not optional. They are big, bulky and only generally added as a last ditch effort to get the device (cable) passed minimum requirements for radiated emissions and or susceptibility. Its hard to believe that someone would add a ferrite to a cable unless they needed it.

my setup is 100% monoprice cables

As I said, good quality & well shielded cables do not require ferrites.
