Last night, I was educated by a young employee at Best Buy. I was there to buy a router for my daughter. I decided to go and browse around the HT section. First of all, I did not find anything exciting in the Magnolia section. I thought my speakers, receiver, and amplifiers were much better than what they offered. The only thing that was impressive was a Mitsubishi Diamond series TV, but I already own one of those.
I got bored and decided to go to the cable section. The young employee asked me if I needed any help. I asked him why the Monster HDMI cables were $99. He told me that it is because they are well-made 1.3 cables and if I wanted to get the most recent Dolby and DTS surround sound, I would have to buy the Monster cable. ![]() I realized last night that I must have been in denial and delusional in thinking that I have had HD audio for the past several years. I own around 15 different HDMI cables from 3ft to 35 ft. Some are 28 gauge with ferrite cores. Some are 24 gauge and a couple are 22 gauge. I have two HDMI cables that have silver coated copper and are expensive. I plan to burn them all tonight and replace them with $99 Monster HDMI cables. ![]() ![]() |

No I wont give up on the cheap HDMI cables but I will be more careful. My freind bought a pair of Rocketfish HDMI cables at BB for his HD tv and PS3 and they work great according to him. So I might give those a try.

The problem is that you weren't making a distinction between cheap and inexpensive in your discussion. As has been stated many times, the Monster HDMI cables are manufactured in the same plants in China as all of the other cables out there. There just aren't many factory lines that make HDMI wire yet. Where the differences come in are in shielding and termination. I would bet that the vast majority of problems people have with cheaply constructed cables is in poor termination. HDMI is pretty sensitive in that area and if it isn't done right, you get dropouts and artifacts and so on. The reason this is an important distinction is that, while there are certainly plenty of cheap cables out there that will have problems out of the box or within a short time after being hooked up, there are plenty of inexpensive brands that terminate their cables quite well, shield their cables quite well, warranty their cables quite well, and do not charge you a massive premium for the same wire with their name stamped on it.
I think the odds of success are pretty good even with bargain cables at Amazon and Wally World, but I personally have kept my HDMI purchases to mostly BJC with a couple of Monoprice cables. I get very good prices for the same wire, except for the BJC ones which are the only HDMI cables manufactured in the US so far, confidence in the shielding and termination, and all for a much smaller price premium for the confidence in quality and warranty. There are several other brands that offer the same advantages, but those are my personal choices. Chris |

I bid out my HT installation to 3 companies last year and chose the one I liked
with a good price. It just so happens they installed all of the componets using Audioquest HDMI cables. Audioquest cables are very expensive, and I have some 3 footers and some that are 35 feet. I am glad I have the audioquest for the long runs ( all in my head I guess), but I have bought cables for the bedrooms from Monoprice and Bluejean cable for $6.00 and I have never had a problem. Buy what you feel comfortable with. I read a report from CNET were they say all of the Equipment they test with are cheap HDMI cables, they say save your money on high dollar HDMI's |

Assuming the cable is built according to specs & is built correctly it will perform just as any other HDMI cable!
The difference is how well they are built with the wire twist between the pairs and internally and how well they are terminated, do they have shielding etc!!! It's all about how much data gets to the set from point a to b, the more data you get to point b the better you are, with a generic cable you may experience ghosting, dropouts or freezes which is what happened to me when I got my new plasma TV I ended buying 3 cheap cables & all failed on me & one was incredibly bad when it came to dropouts, I even had to call the manufacturer to come & test my tv cause I thought there was something wrong with it, but it wasn't the tv it was the hdmi cables I was using!!! In the end I purchased an: IXOS XHT458-200 HDMI Cause MONSTER aint the only brand out there, Anyway my problem was fixed straight away, I could tell from the moment I was opening the packet the cable was very well built & I don't regret paying the extra money what so ever, hope this info helps ![]() Last edited by Yautja; 12-22-2009 at 04:38 AM. |

I have a Yamaha RX-V465 receiver. Sometimes about 3 minutes after turning on my receiver and blu-ray player there is a quick flash of a white short line on the screen and then from then on it doesn't happen again. This happened in the blu-ray setup menu as well and it doesn't happen on the same spot of the screen all the time. If I replay the part where the white line flash happened in a movie it doesn't happen again, so it's not the movie. I'm running a 6 ft HDMI cable from my blu-ray player to my receiver and another 6 ft HDMI cable from my receiver to my TV. They are cheap generic HDMI cables. I also had this happen once in a while with a couple of other receivers with different cheap HDMI cables but I didn't see it happen on one receiver I tried out so that's is why I'm suspecting the cables. Also I never had this problem when connecting my blu-ray player directly to my TV. I was thinking of picking up some higher quality more expensive HDMI cables but I don't want to risky buying more expensive HDMI cables for nothing.
