Exclamation NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - official discussion thread

Just got done watching it. Didn't see why this movie was hyped so much. I was waiting until the end for something that would redem this movie but, nothing did. The Cohen bros sucked at this one.

How did this win best picture? There must have been crap movies out this year for No Country to win. I find it funny that someone argued with me that the Cohen bros. were better at films than Tarantino. What a joke. I'd even say that Tarantino's part of Grindhouse was better than this film, and Death Proof was an average at best movie.

I think your stance is much more amusing than theirs, actually.

The fact that you mentioned a film like "300" (or "Superbad") in the same sentence as something like "No Country for Old Men" already negates for anything more to be said .

Not sure about him being one of the "greatest writers of our time," but I agree with the rest.

For those interested: the next McCarthy novel to get the big screen treatment is "The Road" with Viggo Mortensen, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron.

I'm glad this thread was created, because sometimes one persons perspective can be a lot different than anothers......

I thought the movie was FANTASTIC, and trust me, I don't need to convince myself that I like a movie that I purchased as a blind buy..... I thought it had very complex characters, and the movie had action and plot, what more can I ask for????

Now my Wife on the other hand, didn't care for the movie....... at first it was "too violent" and then the ending left her wanting more conclusion..... The problem is, I had to convince my wife that I needed to own this movie, and reluctantly she said I could order it, having not seen it. (I just convinced her we needed Netflix a month ago, so we have that) She thinks since we have Netflix we shouldn't buy as many movies as I did before..... well, I knew Netflix would be a "preview before buy" tool, but she thinks it's an alternative to buy kind of thing...... Anyways, she just doesn't understand why I feel the need to own so many movies, when she's perfectly content to rent her chick-flicks because she rarely re-watches a movie very many times (except My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Snatch, and Blow, which she seems to be able to watch at any moment!)

This movie got me in the dog-house because the moment the credits popped up, she looked at me and said "you shouldn't buy so many movies"

I just have to say, and it's not really just you, because these types of comments regarding wives run rampant throughout this forum.

I just married my wife in January (been together for six and a half years, lived together for six). She knows I buy movies. I don't ask permission, I don't need her permission, because it's something she just knows I do. She also knows that I would never put my hobby in front of our financial well-being in, and that I'm generally a frugal spender, so, if I buy a movie, she doesn't worry about if it was needed or how much it was, because she knows we always have what we need. The only time I hear about it is if it's a movie she doesn't care about . (And yes, I heard about it for this one!) It just always seems that something this trivial would be a non-issue by the time people are married.

I don't mean anything rude or anything toward anybody. I just always find it funny that guys are always having to justify things to their wives. Maybe my wife and I are just lucky/weird that it's never anything that needs discussion.

I thought the characters were interesting, especially Tommy Lee Jones and how he reacts to the situation unfolding around him.

I found his laid back approach initially intriguing, as I thought it would end up getting results. It never did, though, so by the end of the movie you could argue that he was simply lazy and incompetent, too busy philosophizing about the state of the world to do much actual police work.

Much of the movie built to a big showdown between hunter and hunted, and then it ends up being presented as such a non-event that they literally skip it entirely and only show us the result. Yes, that's different, but I don't think in a good way.

The movie just kinds of end with no resolution. I suppose that got it major points from the Oscars crowd, since it wasn't a typical, neat Hollywood ending. To me it was unsatisfying though.

I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers, so this was a blind buy for me on BD (I wasn't able to see it in the theaters). I was quite a bit disappointed. It was put together very well and had some good acting and intriguing moments, but it just didn't come together as a movie. Count me in the group that's puzzled how this got an Oscar.

The characters and acting was excellent, but there was no story, and they killed what was the closest thing to a main character off screen, wtf?

The movie itself was terrible, the only thing good about it was the acting. Too often Hollywood forgets what makes a good movie, so they see a turd that doesn't have a clear main character or story and immediately assume it is good just because they don't understand it. But in the end all it is is a turd, no highs or lows, just one constant gore fest with no plot or purpose.

Cool

I thought the performances were strong and overall the movie was good, but I can't understand why it won best film. I mentioned this in another thread and some jerkoff flamed me for having bad taste in films. I'm still adding NCFOM to my collection, but There Will Be Blood is the one I want to see.

To me I liked the movie, but I know some of my friends didn't for there wasn't that closure (found in most typical movies) on the characters since their use to that kind of thing.

i really enjoyed this movie.

yes, it was a very slow moving movie.
no, it was not your typical heart wrenching best picture award winning movie.

but hell, i thought the visuals in the movie were phenomenal. and i was extremely pleased to see a movie that wasnt this non-stop shoot em up action flick with unbelievable action sequences.

i was overly pleased with this flick
