I spent 7 years in collections myself, and I don't know why there is such a stigma over what it is we do. Sure, there are harassing/unprofessional collectors, but why paint everyone with the same brush?

And quite frankly, if you are responsible and don't get yourself into a credit mess, you don't have to worry about the collectors, do you?

LOL...not necessarily. Try having a simliar name to somoene else in the general metro area who got in trouble, and then convincing the collector on the other end who's calling multiple times a day that you're not the one they want and don't owe them anything. It's a hassle coupled with a burden.

Whoa, that sucks! I suppose it took speaking with multiple supervisors before that got resolved, huh?

Try having the financial power of attorney for a severely disabled relative who resides in a nursing home who owes $2000 to Discover card, faxing them proof that the person is permanently disabled, will never work again, and having your attorney explain this to them... and they STILL call ten times a day.

as cold as it sounds the disability doesn't make the debt disappear, that is up to Discover if they want to drop the issue, not the agency involved.

also, those issues are mainly with "retail collection services", very different from "commercial/business to business" collection agencies.

Camper was also dealing with a retail agency, the ones who pursue individuals.

Yup, happens to me a lot. A guy in town has a very similar last name (but spelled a bit different) and his poor credit has messed up my credit report with two of the 3 major credit agencies (I fixed them both) and I get these collection calls every 6 months to a year. Pain in the arse.

It doesn't make the debt disappear... but since her only income is SSD.... and 100% of that goes to the nursing home she resides in..... and it will be that way for the rest of her life....... eventually it will cost them more to continue to try to collect the debt than she actually owes.

Yeah, unfortunately, that will happen. Like I said, there are unscrupulous collectors who will call multiple times a day, threaten you with actions they never plan to follow through on, all of which are violations of the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collections Practices Act) and it's those types of people who give the business a bad reputation.

But I never got the argument that debt collectors = telemarketers. Yes, they'll both call at dinner time, etc. Yes, they can be very aggressive. But while telemarketing is selling you something you likely don't want or need, collections is essentially selling you something that you've already used and haven't paid for. If a bill goes unpaid for months, can a creditor just assume that it'll be paid for eventually? Of course not. Some people need to be reminded.

I understand the annoyance factor, but the overwhelming majority of collectors are just doing our job. I did some quasi-personal collections for a couple years (small business loans, but they required a personal guarantor, and did not cancel themselves even if the company went out of business) and for collecting on legitimate debts and trying to do a fair job I was routinely insulted, occasionally threatened (one man wanted me to fight him in the parking lot of his business over a credit card machine) and even had death wished upon me. Yes, there was one occasion of a collection groupie (an interesting story in itself), but the majority of the time my respectful pleas for payment as was agreed to was met with violent diatribes.

And teabaggins is right, b2b collections is an entirely different animal, because you're usually dealing with someone in A/P who might have simply forgot or never received the bill or the backup, and they usually give you a little less hassle because it's not personally their money.

also, I only deal with our clients(the companies who are owed the money) I'm not the one doing the actual collections on other companies.

We handle a lot of contractual disputes or problems with product/service as well as companies just flat out refusing to pay a legit invoice. Sometimes we have to correct our own clients as well when they are in the wrong and help both parties find a middle ground. Our investigators are only as douchey as the debtor makes them, if you act civilized then they will be civil as well.

FDCPA doesn't really apply to commercial debt but our collectors and investigators hear it on a daily basis as an excuse.

We use attorneys and PI's as well if need be.

the agency should pull the plug on the collection after a while. the problem is that companies like Discover have 3 to 4 agencies as backup ready to go. how long has this been going on?
