Default Ratatouille #3 in Amazon Sales Rankings

Ratatouille #16 in Amazon Sales Rankings and climbing. Very impressive, I wonder if this release will move into the top 10?

I think it would be difficult to. This movie did not perform so well in the box office and received very mixed reviews from viewers.

Besides, animation is not as mainstream as some of us would like it to be. It may be too niche.

A couple of interesting things in the link you gave.

Shrek III isn't doing that good as a pre-order so far, but Bourne Ulitmatum is. POC3 isn't doing as good as I'd expect either.

Over all, Amazon sales rank means very little if you look at it for one point in time. What would matter is if R-T stayed in the top ten for multiple days/weeks. Other than that, the #16 rank could potentially mean that just 5 titles were sold in the last hour and that just happened to be the 16th best.

Rankings can be very misleading unless held for a long period of time.

Example:

Transformers held #6ish on Amazon for at least 2-3 weeks prior to release. The last week, Pirates and other Blu-Ray titles held numerous top 25 positions, but still made up less than 10% of the total for Transformers (on an individual basis) for the week.

EDITED for clarity.

ratatouille didn't get mixed reviews, it got great reviews. it was hands down the best animated film of the year by all the major critics. it had the best word of mouth of any movie this summer. I believe it grossed $200 million here in the US.

The movie did really well in the US and internationally. It would have grossed more, but Transformers was released the week after this movie. I have only ehard great things about it though.
Domestic: $205,375,053 37.1%
+ Foreign: $348,162,311 62.9%

Total Box office Gross =$553,537,364

POTC 3 has been available longer for preorder. bourne just shown up on amazon so it's guaranteed a quick boost. I bet cars for a catalog outsells shrek 3.

Bourne Ultimatum was just released for pre order. POTC 3 has been available for preorder for months. Thus, it is accumulating sales that will not count until the movie is released. The movie is going to sell tons!

It's one of the best reviews movies this year. It did pretty good at the box office this summer, maybe not as good as expected but still good overall. I believe it grossed over $200 million in the USA and grossed around $350 overseas bringing the total to around at least $550 million.

So, it's likely it will do quite well internationally.

It may sell tons but maybe that's true in the US only, don't you think?

I assume you are being sarcastic.
A 150 million dollar production budget is high but so far to date this film has yielded over 550 million or close to 4 times it cost. Not to mention over 150 million dollars before it opened in marketing and branding. Such a t-shirts, posters, games, just about everything except cigarettes, tampons and condoms.

Animation not mainstream???? Two of the ten highest grossing films of the year are animated films. Last year was even better for animation. Three of the top 10 films were animated. Cars came in at number 3. And Over the Hedge just missed being in the top 10 by 5 million dollars.

And animation does even better on home video. The highest grossing DVD last year was Cars. In fact every year there is a Pixar and/or Disney film on DVD it is in the top 3 highest grossing films of the year when both theatrical and home video figures are combined.

Who has won more Oscars than any other studio? Disney. The maker of more animated movies than anyone.

I would say that pretty much makes animated movies pretty main stream.

Apparently, the French love the movie. I saw where it did VERY well there. With the French Blu-ray association that just happened recently, I imagine it will be pushed hard.

Absolutely correct. Animation has always been one of the best genres to invest in. If that wasn't the case, then why are they still making all these (ugh) direct-to-video animated movies?

I can imagine why. I bet it did quite well in Italy too as well. It's the food, the food!

Don't worry, it will do much better than what Amazon indicates. Family films are more B&M oriented compared to sci-fi or action flicks (which tend to do better on e-tailers).

This is one all my PS3-owner friends (some gamers, some not so much) all agree that it's a must-buy. Maybe it's the food (I'm in it for the girlfriend, and the rat, as I love cute furry animals ).

enjoy

Ratatouille was my favorite Pixar film. I've seen every one of them. I've already got my pre-order on the way.

I think these rankings are only worthwhile when it gets closer to release dates. I only preorder to keep track of what I want on Amazon. I see no other benefits to pre-ordering.

I guess you got Ratatouille mixed up with Shrek The Third?

I agree..RottenTomatoes.com gave Ratatouille an extremely high 97% from a total of 192 reviews. I hardly see any movie rated that high on there site.
