Default SACD, DVD-Audio and DualDisc recommendations

i have begun buying sa-cds and love those things. so far i have a few bob dylan albums (highway 61 revisited, on the tracks, bringing it all back home, desire), pink floyd: dark side of the moon, and the who: tommy. i am now buying a few dualdiscs: motorhead, the pogues, and ac/dc.

does anyone have recommendations as to other listening material?

are there any other obscure advanced audio formats the ps3 supports?

Weird Al's new album

DD 5.1 mix on the DVD side, as well as PCM and a full karaoke track for the entire album (with lyrics). Music videos, making-of video

Oh and the music is great too

No, it won't play DVD-A. Needs a special chip for that.

I have a couple hundred SACDs and my favorite genre is classic jazz but I'll try to list mainly classic rock titles since your tastes run to that. Also, I'm not sure about the current availability of all these but here are a few favorites in no particular order:

Bob Dylan: The Freewheelin
Gil Evans + Ten
Stevie Ray Vaughan: Couldn't Stand the Weather
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme
Rolling Stones: Beggar's Banquet
Beck: Sea Change
Elton John: Tumbleweed Connection
The Police: Regatta de Blanc
Earth Wind & Fire: All'n All
Jorma Kaukonen: Blue Country Heart
Charles Mingus: Ah Um
Joe Satriani: Engines of Creation
James Taylor: JT
Sopranos: Peppers & Eggs
Grant-Lee Phillips: Mobilize
John Lee Hooker: Boogie Chillen'
Isley Brothers: 3+3
Groove Armada: Goodbye Country Hello Nightclub
Derek and the Dominos: Layla
Deep Purple: Machine Head
CCR: Bayou Country
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong: Ella and Louis
David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust
The Allman Brothers Band: At Fillmore East

Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral, available in both SACD and DualDisc DVD-A. SACD comes with a second disc of B-sides.

It will play the Dolby/DTS 5.1s included on every DVD-A on the video TS folder, but not the DVD-A files on the audio folder

Pop/rock hi-res audio show-off recommendations:

For DVD-A, Grateful Dead American Beauty. One of those precious few with 24/192 stereo and sounds out of this world. Also Stone Temple Pilots Core sounds especially good. Doors box set too.

For SACD, Incubus Crow Left of the Murder Scene; Johnny Cash At Folsom is pretty good.

Then there are the "legit" titles, for which genre the death of SACD has been greatly exaggerated. I'm just starting to collect these; for a comparison I got a von Karajan Beethoven 9th SACD from Deutsche Grammophon which I happened to have on CD. After hearing the Ode to Joy I wish CD a slow but pleasant death for classical & baroque titles.

johnny cash is on sacd? the only thing i've been able to find of his was a christmas cd.

where do you all buy these from? so far i've been sticking with amazon since most other places have none or very few.

my wife hates all of you now. now every few days I hear ''don't we already have this movie?'' and now ''don't you already have this on cd? and on record (LP)?''

gremal,
thank you for the recommendations as well. i'm going to look for john lee hooker: boogie chillin. a favorite of mine.

are there any other good blues sacds out there? i'm into john lee hooker, robert johnson, t-model ford,........crap. i'm drawing a blank now. there's a few others. one is on the sapranos soundtrack. song titled ''its bad you know''. damnit.

to those who have dvd-a: so my ps3 can play PART of them I what I understand. is it worth just that part? i've never heard one before or even seen them around so I don't know. but there are a few albums that look interesting.

thanks everyone so far

Moody Blues and Genesis are both partway through releasing remastered SACDs of their catalogs as well.

If you have any taste for bluegrass influenced Nickel Creek's first two albums on SACD are my personal favorites.

Also on SACD is the last Johnny Cash album (which I can't find), but that's it for him. Availability (for pop/rock titles) is a big problem. For months I've been scraping in retailers and secondhand music shops to get to 58 discs (combined SACD and DVD-A Adv. Res); haven't tried online yet but that's my next project.

For blues or at least blues-rock on SACD I found Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood and George Thorogood's first album (both awesome records but not really demo material AQ-wise).

AFAIK the PS3 can't play the "Advanced Resolution" tracks found on some DVD-As. These unfortunately are the real goodies which often sound comparable to SACD. (There's a lot of variation here; you have to check the fine print on the disc to see if you're getting 24/48, 24/88.2, 24/96 or 24/192 and for how many channels.) However sometimes a DVD-A has a DTS or Dolby Digital surround track which the PS3 can read. Finally some Dual Discs are 16/48 (instead of 16/44.1) and the PS3 can probably play those (I haven't tried it).

Dude, you win the internet today. At least in my opinion.

One you ought to add Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells. Instead of a remastered 5.1 mix, it has an old quadraphonic mix, plus a hirez 2ch version CD layer. Its pretty spiffy if you like Mike.

Since I lean more towards DVD audio I can't list that many SACDs, but must buys for me (if you can't get the DVDA) are:

* Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
* Elton John - Goodbye yellow Brick Road
* Pink Floyd - DSotM (you already got that one)
* Peter Gabriel - Up
* Roxy Music - Avalon
* Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (not the dual disc!)
* Maceo Parker - Schools In

There are more of course, but that's a nice start. The first three are also available as DVDAs (DSotM only as a *cough* torrent *cough*) and are highly recommended on that format. If you're digging 5.1 music I would seriously consider getting a DVDA player. If only for the complete LOTR scores available only on DVDA

does anyone know of a good (and hopefully inexpensive) dvd-a player? looking through what dvd-a has there's some interesting titles so i would like to start looking into them. what kind of outputs to the players have? i have an onkyo sr605 and both hdmi inputs are in use. but the optical inputs are open. in fact the hdmi inputs and 1 set of rca inputs (for my turntable) are the only ones in use. anybody have a recommendation?

I own these..however, I've listened to more than a few dozen.

Roger Waters The Wall Live
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
Shania Twain Up
Ayumi Hamasaki My Story

Of the four, the multi channel Ayumi is definitely the best, even if you HATE Japanese pop/rock music, the Ayumi is one of the best SACD over all..and one of the few pieces of uniquely modern music available on SACD

Get ready to start loving classical music and jazz...if you want to get heavy into SACD.

Wow, what a list..!

I strongly suggest you pick up ROGER WATERS THE WALL LIVE on SACD as well as the AYUMI HAMASAKI MY STORY on SACD...you're missing out on some great multi channel music..!
