Wow, a 4K scanner for only $25k. How good a job would something as basic as that do. Which type of quality are we talking about?

Thumbs up

Hispasat has a 4K TV channel that anyone with a satellite dish can view for free on the Amazonas 3 satellite @ 61W.
The tech specs are:
12012 V 30000 DVB-S2 8PSK with a FEC of 2/3

It's 3840x2160 progressive L5.1 H.264 video @ 35 Mbps with a framerate of 23.976 fps.

http://www.satellitetoday.com/region...ntic-channels/

Quote:
Spanish satellite operator Hispasat has decided to permanently broadcast a new Free-to-Air (FTA) channel in Ultra-HD, or 4K, across both North and Central America. The decision is part of the company’s goal to bolster its transatlantic coverage.

Hispasat has supported an open 4K channel in Europe since September 2013. The new FTA channel, called Hispasat 4K, was announced at NAB. The Amazonas 3 satellite will be used to broadcast the channel, which already serves several hours of programming. Hispasat also said it would supply advanced solutions for new video formats in order to accelerate the acceptance of 4K.

“We expect to rapidly increase the content available thanks to the agreement we have reached with High TV to broadcast via Hispasat 4K,” said Hispasat’s Business Director Ignacio Sanchis.

Sanchis added that Hispasat is investing heavily in research and development for 4K broadcasting, and that collaborating with decoder manufacturers is a top priority. So far, the company has demonstrated a Hispasat 4K broadcast using a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference decoder designed by ST Microelectronics. Via transponder 94, Hispasat 4K will use second generation Digital Video Broadcasting — Satellite (DVB-S2) for Hispasat 4K.

I thought I was still in your Blu-ray/DVD/tumor board thread! Scorpion, initially, you confused the hell out of me. Good to see 4K info.

I have no personal experience in that price range. Hesitate to say.

Also, note to Richard, as I think you were previously concerned about this – toward the end of the clip….’Dolby is developing an overall performance scale based upon peak luminance, contrast ratio and colorspace’…
It's good that Dolby will consider more than HDR but my guess is that most of the score will be related to HDR since that is the only mandatory feature for their Dolby Vision displays and because Dolby has a lot of HDR patents.

Kris. Where you been ? Have you been following the sonar related tech in trying to locate the black box(es) from the missing Malaysian flight? Fascinating stuff.

Anyway, HDR is just starting to get traction beyond the scientific literature where it has been for years, (e.g. SID 2003 - http://www.anyhere.com/gward/papers/sid03.pdf)
into the entertainment industry public consciousness for some sort of practical business model using panel technology (LCD, OLED).

Just at the last CinemaCon this past March (http://cinemacon.com/schedule/2014-events/) prior to NAB, although not mentioned on that website link, a D-Cinema think tank group was approached and asked to investigate the feasibility of implementing HDR into the theatrical setting, which would be an even higher hurdle to overcome because of things like safety lighting in theaters, lack of any active screen technology in the foreseeable future, etc. We’ll just have to wait and see what transpires with home theater front projection.
Been around, just not posting a lot. I realize that the side by side comparison clipping is a product of the capture for the internet video. I'm sure I'll see this up close and personal at CEDIA this year.

I've been watching a little bit on the missing flight. I've seen them talk about using UUVs and side look sonar, which was my bread and butter for over a decade. I miss that kind of stuff. I have a year left on my current career and I can take a deferred retirement so who knows, maybe I'll get back into that business or start in on something else. Hope all is well!

What STB and/or tuner card are you using to receive 3840x2160? Software?

I have been using Prof 7301, TSReader and GEOSATpro microHD for PBS (1920x1080) on AMC-21.

Nearly full coverage is theoretically achievable, but there needs to be improvement from the current state of affairs….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ed#post8832110

which, as an aside, the BVM-F’s (top of the mastering line) almost completely cover SMPTE RP 431-2-2007 (DCI P3), except for a tiny bit of the chromaticity of the green-red region.

Just in case you’re interested and you’d prefer to follow the development of open source HDR standards, this is a good place to begin…http://w3.cost.eu/index.php?id=110&action_number=IC1005

Is that chart from some UHD-related products manufacturer or a standards setting organization? Except for the deployment timeline prediction and being in an easy-to-read chart form, it appears mighty similar to the roadmap which I presented last October….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...hd#post8233176

Anyway, to answer your question….no, we're not in 'Phase 1'....current bit depth is 8 bit distribution.

All is well, thanks for asking.
In fact my wife and I are considering vacation house-hunting (a northern vacation getaway this time) like in the coastal region of Washington state. Do you have any recommendation(s) for a quaint town up there similar to something like the old town area of Annapolis, or if you haven’t been there, something like Victoria in B.C. ?

We don’t require a ‘historical’ town per se, more like seaside living.
