Bails, I think you’re going to give Peter heartburn or a stroke with all the DTS:X awareness.

Nothing really that hasn't been announced before.

And nothing Atmos can't already do.

I admit, the Atmos for OAS:TNC https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post10107534

It's their typical format war shenanigans. Wait for Dolby to come up with something, then push your own version on the market years later and hope people adopt it instead.

"DTS: we go to 11!"

I'm hoping someday the gullible fanboys will stop and realize the entire company is based on copying and snake oil.

I would agree with you Peter if only DTS HDMA hadn't conquered the biggest part of the market. I can't risk being left with an inferior product or an incompatible one.

You know what they say. Dolby innovates, DTS imitates.

It is to soon the amount of 4k TV's, the real ones, not the old I'm sorry your screwed because you don't have HDMI 2.0 and/or cannot play 60fps is so small. Blu Rays took off because of the PS3 and everyone had or did in the 2 years to follow because HD became the standard. Over 95% of people are happy with their 720p or 1080p TV's. No channels are broadcast in 4k. You can only find it in certain places like Youtube, media streamers, certain Netflix Titles, ect. and need a 70 inch or bigger monitor to even notice a difference and still need to sit close to the monitor.
Most people do not care. I imagine it will be a long time before you get enough people to buy a brand new 4K TV and 4K compatible Blu Ray Player unless there TV breaks and they care.
I hope a lot of New 4K Blu-ray titles are released but I would guess it will be slim at first because sales will be very slow. They already released the 4k transfers onto 1080p regular Blu-ray disaster and that got stopped in its tracks before it even started. There are how many 15-20 of those. Most people won't even know the difference. And even for the die hard videophiles, most of us I hope realize that catalog titles 6-7 years or older and especially 2000 and earlier most are not going to look that much better. yeah there are exceptions but for the most part I for one am not going to buy any comedy's, dramas, or documentaries again. How much better will Good Will Hunting or Silence of the Lambs look vs my Blu-ray copy. I'm curious even great big budget catalog titles like Saving Private Ryan or Gladiator look like on a 4k Blu-ray vs a Blu-ray copy up converted on a 4k TV. I bet you need an 80 plus inch TV or projector sitting 10 feet or closer, and even then. I hope I am dead wrong but I think catalog titles for the most part are not going to look much better. I just hope the 5 years back to recent titles really matter, because unless I'm sitting 7-8 feet or closer the difference in 4k has been disappointing so far. But I have a 65 inch monitor, maybe I would need to go bigger but for my daily TV watching I don't want anything bigger. I would need to see something special in order to get a projector and build a media room. Bring on 4k Blu rays, but I better be dazzled to order to buy a projector and a new pre amp.

Gotta love this continued optimism over 4K on disc, considering the studios are doing everything they can right now NOT to provide disc-based product and those that do - Universal especially - seem incapable of putting out any catalogue titles that are significantly better than average!

The theory is sound. But I can't see this working out at all.

It's a value add that will likely be used on certain films, same as 3D.

Dolby Digital (AC-3) was in development way before CDS launched.

Not to mention CDS wasn't on 35MM prints for a while, and needed special print runs because there was no backwards-compatible analog track which all the other digital formats (DD/DTS/SDDS) had. Theater chains wanted that. CDS was a good attempt but in the end ill-conceived.
