This is all exciting stuff. Can't wait! If the Samsung player is really going to be under 500 bucks then sold, as long as there's no online authentication. Anybody heard anything else about that??

The UHD Alliance is the cause of the delay.
Well that's a pain in the arse. By the sounds of the Samsung presentation the digital bridge feature won't be on early models either, sounds like another profile fiasco.

At least digital trends are hopeful of a player this year, I wonder if they know something?

Surely one of the other ce's can announce something.

$30 discs they must be dreaming. Will it be $30 with a line through it and actually sold for $19.99 like BDs are now?

That too is a sticking point with me, especially now that John Deere and a host of other companies are trying to re-write the definition of ownership by using patent laws.

Meaning... you don't own what you think you own.

If they're bundling with Blu-ray discs to start then no. $30 may be street pricing of movie only editions for awhile.

Here's something: http://www.businesswire.com/news/hom...D#.VeheaOFRG1g

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSELB) and MediaTek today announced a collaboration to offer Dolby Vision™ 4K UHD system-on-a-chip (SoC) technologies for high-dynamic-range (HDR) TVs, Ultra HD Blu-ray™ players, and digital media adapters (DMAs).

I always thought the price would be there or thereabouts. This is not some revolutionary type of tech but an extension to the BD format, anything costing much more than that in today's climate would be commercial suicide (unless it's got an Oppo badge on it, natch).

I hope Sony announce something player-wise, it'd be a nice surprise if they put P3 to xvYCC mapping inside the player so that us 2013/2014 Sony 4K owners can take advantage of the wider gamut. Come on Sony, throw us 4K pioneers a frickin' bone.

Question(s):

Is that a real player we are looking at or is it another mock-up? Did anyone open up the tray, put in a disc and play it? Of course, the second question being: is there really a production disc of KINGSMAN or anything else to even test?

My concern, as I've mentioned before, is really with the testing of production standard discs and I still want to know if a production standard disc has been pressed, inserted into a production standard machine and played.

I guess any news is good and I don't want to be a total wet blanket...I'm just a bit bored with pretty looking boxes and promises.

I want to see a corporate rep on the stage with a UHD BD player and a big 4K TV. I want him to open up the tray, insert a copy of KINGSMAN and then bask in the thunderous applause of a stunned audience as they watch the glory of UHD BD.

That chubby hipster walking around a box with the Samsung logo isn't satisfying me. Yeah...it's something...but not much.

They won't because the video interface requires HDCP 2.2 encryption protocols that at least those 2013 models do not have.

Seeing this gets me excited, but I kinda have mixed feelings about buying day one. The emphasis now is on HDR, and my 2013 Sony set won't take advantage of it. If HDR is the main difference-maker, then I may sit tight until I upgrade my 4K TV. Just a resolution bump doesn't make much difference in PQ, in most cases.

They're a lot more visual improvements than HDR in the UHD Blu-ray specs... including the opening of the flood gate for Dolby Atmos and DTS: X soundtracks.

However, you may be forced to buy a new UHD TV anyway. HDCP 2.2 is a requirement for full UHD playback. Early adopters always get the shaft.

More than likely your set does not have it.

I sure hope so and if they are then we should also see replacement Blu-ray cases become common place.

Could that be an SD card slot on the front center? If so, the player will have the Digital Bridge and be VIDITY compliant.
So, that is a USB port in front center, probably to connect the WD Cinema Passport loaded with the UHD & UHD HDR VIDITY downloads currently available from M-GO.

Yes, Basse did say future Samsung players are expected to have the Digital Bridge option, but it is likely that the first Samsung UHD player released, presumably in 2016 will have it. Since UHD Alliance standards have not been set yet, all we are looking at is a prototype player.

My set does have a HDCP 2.2 port. That is required to play 4K content from the Sony FMP-X10 media player. I have the oldest Sony 4K model (65X900A), but only the earliest sets from the first few manufacture months didn't have 2.2 on board.

Freaky, you keep stating that like it's true but it's not. Only the very first production runs of Sony's 2013 4K models didn't have the HDCP 2.2, later runs had it built in. And the people who did get the first builds were offered an HDCP 2.2 board upgrade.

[edit] What Bruce said. And I'm of a similar mind to him too: there's no point upgrading for an increase in spatial resolution alone, seeing as I don't give a rat's ass about object based audio.

My tv doesn't have the wider color gamut either. And since I'll be watching mainly film-based movies, 24fps is still 24fps not matter what the format. So AFAIK, the only difference I'll see will be an increase in resolution, and so far it hasn't been very impressive. Maybe the extra bit rate from UHD BD vs. Sony downloads will make a difference, but I doubt it will be much.

I love that Fox's announced initial line-up of 7 movies includes only one film with a 4K DI, The Maze Runner, while the rest are all from 2K masters, including Kingsman. Sad that this is probably going to be par for the course for some time to come.

Regarding the 2k masters, I wonder if I'll see any difference at all on my set. At least I know the Sony movies are 4k masters.
