I agree, yet it's such a niche market with streaming comprising such a large share of consumer expenditures.

Those of us know this to be a redundant point by now, but there's so much in the vaults of studios who are probably reluctant to invest in output.

Honestly, it's not much of a complaint, but titles are few and far between for 2021 where hopefully updates will add to the schedule.

Yeah that's kinda the thing about thinking it's all so 'bleak' for the year when we're barely out of February. We literally get the same thing said by people every year

Lol, and I'll admit I jumped the gun expecting a full calendar.

It's more or less a waiting game so point taken.

And the last quarter of 2021 alone provided a veritable tsunami of catalogue product. Moral of the story: don’t fookin panic about UHD’s future based on what’s announced up to February.

Purchase of content for home use has always been a niche market when looks at the global revenue scale (here). It is true the revenue from home entertainment purchase, physical + EST, is way down from yesteryear and ownership is in decline. SVOD is certainly a major player and grows but does so at the expense of other methods of delivery.

Some folks seem to have the attitude that niche products are doomed to failure. One being audio pre-amps or A/V processors. Yet today there are number of AVP's that are available, just have to know where to look. A reference here. Another niche product is the video projector, if you want one of the new JVC’s you will have to wait in line.

Pretty much always a drought of new product for the first 2 quarters of any new year other than the Holiday season movies coming to home video.

Me in 2016: I won't be upgrading to 4K, Blu-ray is good enough for me.
Me in 2022: 130+ 4K movies in my collection...

Default Are new 4K UHD models being released?

I'm looking at the availability of 4K players and I usually see the same handful of models. Most models are 4 years or older. Some models seem to be out of stock for a long time.
Are they still being manufactured? Instead of getting cheaper, they also seem to get more expensive when time goes by. So I wonder if I have to act now before they are gone forever?
Any thoughts?

You didn’t look very hard at this subforum before creating a new thread, eh…

No, none of the larger companies have new players coming out. There’s no need. Chinese knock-off Oppos keep coming out, at absurd prices. The latest one is called MAGNETAR.

I'm sorry. I looked but somehow I missed it. But do they keep making old models? Or is it when they are gone, they are gone?

I have found the Magnetar. It's 1600! I'm looking for some models in the 200 -250 range

For that price only the Sony x700, maybe the 800m2.

I was looking at the LG ubk90. Within a couple of days it increased with 30 euro on Amazon. When I was looking at other retailers, this one seems to be sold out. So I was wondering if that's temporarily? Are they manufacturing more?

But they are still releasing UHD BluRays. If you want to step in with an 4K UHD player, you are basically too late? Or you have to pay a lot for a high end player?

Check this one out. It is multi-region and is higher end if you're looking for an "OPPO" type player.

Best Buy carries both LG and Sony 4K BD players as well.

Good luck!

There is no reason to buy any of the Chinese knock-off garbage players when you can get a Panny 420 for around $200-$250.

The 420 lacks Dolby Vision (doesn't matter to Samsung TV owners, of course)

Only one new one (Reavon) has been announced.

The thing is with players, there's really no reason to update them. There's no new technology to put in it unless you are just adding fluff. It's a laser, a drive and mostly software. Even though these players are years old, you wouldn't really gain anything new from a new model outside of aesthetics.

It's like vinyl/record players. The Techincs 1200 from the 70s is still one of the most sought after players. It's well built, has great sound quality and just works. Making one in 2023 wouldn't offer any benefits. There's no new tech to play records. It's a needle, arm and motor.
