Default Cameron drops some Abyss details

http://variety.com/2016/film/news/ja...se-1201821558/

Quote:
“We’ve done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it’s going to look insanely good,” Cameron said. “We’re going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time.”

He said to expect that some time early next year.

I'm so hoping this turns out to be true! I mean, the best we have on the home market is a non-anamorphic DVD, and this film deserves so much better.

I hope its true, but if Cameron said to expect it next year...I'd add about 3-5 years to that at the pace he works.

You may as well get used to having just about every UHD BD movie to include HDR. The only exceptions will be perhaps some really old movies or "low end" releases from obscure distributors or some documentaries. Certainly not a movie as relatively new as The Abyss. It would either get HDR or not get released at all.

I'll get used to every UHD BD movie without HDR. I know it's no fun.
My SONY HDTV was 8 bit DCI rec.708 and 1080p.

I excited SONY New ZD9 4K TV series with HDR is better improved than OLED.

Indeedy, if we're talking about any catalogue movie that's even remotely popular and it gets released by the majors on UHD then HDR will be there by default. As for the indies, it depends on what they're given, as proven by turbine's German release of Texas Chainsaw: the 4K master didn't have HDR so their UHD doesn't have HDR.

I'll be avoiding the Abyss UHD in my current SDR state though, as I don't want this to end up like ID4 all over again. I'll stick with the regular Blu, when it FINALLY appears anyways. This is Cameron we're talking about, after all. King of the World? King of the Procrastinators more like.

HDR would mean UHD. And Fox is a big supporter of the format. I would love to get that movie. Imagine all those blues in 4K HDR. Please include both cuts though.

The Abyss is still good but it is my least favorite Cameron film, but average Cameron is still better than 99% of other directors. Will def pick up since this is a long time coming!!!

Cameron is always super hands on with his movies' transfers, ie Aliens, or Terminator 2 3D (which is still nowhere to be seen ).

What I want is a 4K remaster for Terminator 1 & 2 which are probably in the works, but hey, he's so busy with the 4 Avatar sequels (that I'm super excited for), and his subterranean explorations.
