I had no issues with the aliens blu ray.. I trust as director he knows what he is doing.

All Cameron directed films require his approval. It is contractually obligated which is why T2 recycles the same 2160p HDR master. It is also why T2 looks the way it does, Cameron never had a new master made with his approval. The Terminator is stuck in limbo because boutiques did not want to wait on Cameron to get to it.

We’re only getting this and two other ones as promotional tie-ins to Avatar. And Cameron finally commited some time to approve them.

Will you buy it though? Or will you let some irrational fear prevent you? Then will you ask when the next 20th catalog 4K is coming after Disney decides sales were too low to continue?

To be honest if this is going to be over DNR’d, the December 6th US theatrical re-release will let you know.

I would be shocked if any DNR in this is anywhere near T2 levels. And it's certainly gonna be a major improvement over the DVD, no question. That alone makes the UHD a must-buy if you love the film.

Sure, but the last release is so old, compressed and devoid of detail that the new release is gonna be an upgrade. The 4K is gonna wipe the floor with the old DVD regardless of if it's a 'good 4K' or not.

I have not been to a theater in a good long while and wondering if anyone has been to a
Megaplex Theater with the PlatinumX auditoriums.

Supposedly these PlatinumX theaters have laser projects. Are these any good?

Same here and I'd probably wait till the price goes down. Not in a hurry at all with this title. I do expect this title on UHD Blu-ray to look (I think) the best UHD Blu-ray has to offer...I really do expect this disc to look very filmatic with all the detail you'd ever want to see and more. It will probably have great use of HDR with all the detail 4K scans can offer. And I think it might even have the potential of being one of the greatest looking UHD Blu-ray releases of the year.

To me however,
[Show spoiler]once the face at the end of a water tube is shown
the rest of the movie falls apart for me. I think what happens there (at least for me) is I'm simply thrown out of the suspension of disbelieve which hardily ever happens. Which of course at that point everything else after the big spoiler event...all the drama and whatnot that happens afterwards doesn't mean anything...it's all absurd (to me.) I mean literally at the start of just about any movie...at the very start of the logo my mind goes into movie la la land...I can believe just about anything!

I just don't know. Maybe I'll break out my DVD copy and give it a watch. I haven't seen that copy in over 20 years and it's been 34 years since I've seen it at the theatre.

However, I am glad it's coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray. I know a lot of people are much more excited about than I am, and at the same time I am interested in seeing the technical outcome of this video release. There's no reason why this cannot be a really great release.

Or Films At Home: “Movie appears grainy and teal, also is an older film like Gremlins so not worth the upgrade, stick with Pacific Rim

George is in his own world about how his films should look. Even Steven released the original E.T.

Cameron is a better director then George.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned here already, but the ProRes version of The Abyss reissue for December 6 has leaked, and I've took myself the liberty of taking some screencaps. Of course, the leak was a 1080p version, not 4K. Still, the source of it is a 4K master, and being ProRes, it has much higher bitrate than Youtube, so it's miles better.

The colors of your frame captures match what I see with my MPC install.

This shot at the top of the frame by Bud's forehead exhibits a lot of the original residual grain which the fancy DNR does not handle well at all.

It really stands out in motion, with that languid mushy motion effect common to DNR.

Assuming this trailer is reflective of the end result then the assertion that "We are finally seeing the OCN grain," may turn out to be a gross overstatement.
