Anyone else find lots of laughter in their screening? The jokes were landing in Ontario. Even when Lindsey told Virgil to roll over to stop snoring.

It's not slight. The grain is more-or-less gone. Whatever light noise may be left does not resemble grain.

Absolutely. We had a great audience. Cameron does humor really well in a way that's true to the characters and earnest, not winking at the camera sarcasm.

What made me really happy was some dad brought his three kids and they were all talking about the movie and he was explaining the new ending and all that. Maybe I'm getting sentimental but it was a really endearing torch passing moment.

I don't really have much to complain about here. I've seen some comments on the VFX but they look appropriate for that time. I thought the tidal wave sequence, for the wave itself, looked very good. It's not Avatar 2 but when it comes to VFX nothing is. It's certainly better than a lot of the green screen/Volume work done on so many things now. Aquaman 2 looks like shit visually compared to The Abyss imo.

I'm very happy with the transfer. I'm not an expert but it didn't look distractingly smooth to me. I don't begrudge anyone complaining though. I'd prefer a discussion than a circle jerk. If the negativity or positivity (depending on which side I am on) gets frustrating I just keep scrolling and post my thoughts if I have any, but there's no sense arguing opinion and when it comes to stuff like this.

Ugh, I get squeamish listening to JC in that interview. I hate how dismissive he sounds about The Terminator. It's almost like he's embarrassed by it, and given we still don't have the original mono audio in any current media release (well, best case scenario would be the best audio presentation simply with the original sound effects) I'd imagine that may be the case.

Oh boy. The guy sitting to my right was laughing at the smallest of small ‘jokes’. And even worse, he’d laugh at the most inappropriate moments. Like when Bud was making the last descent and he typing on his arm. It started getting awkward too because most of the time he was the only one laughing in the entire room. Talk about lack of self awareness (borderline inconsiderate).

I still enjoyed the film despite the over processed picture and the non incessant laughter from the guy, but man did those make it hard to enjoy it.

Not the first time he's spoken about T1 in such a way, he thinks of it like it's an embarassing student film or something.

I watched it last night and my theater, there were probably 10-12 of us.

During the tsunami scene, that extra can still be spotted pulling his friends pants down. I thought they would have edited that out. Nope.

I can understand why it comes across that way. I think a lot of it is that he sees something he created with the eyes of a perfectionist, and most likely looks at most of his past work as missed opportunities. As time goes on, technology gets better. Also, his sensibilities are in a different place than when he was younger. I think he expressed that in a nicely encapsulated snippet with that one minute clip.
As someone who's recorded hours and hours and hours of music, done several video projects, and edited them, I am never happy with what I do. Sometimes I feel "OK, I pretty much got it." Then, I have to just step away and let it be what it is.
He most likely just sees what it would be if he did it now, and most likely focuses on what he finds most flawed, regardless of how much that movie did for him. I didn't feel it was disrespectful. Just honest.

Same thing happened with a guy sitting behind me when I saw this at Beyond Fest. He'd give a short little "hmm" laugh/acknowledgement sound several times a minute. Like he was in on some kind of joke. This happens a lot at rep screenings. Some people think they're on their couch with their buddies or something. It's annoying.

when the Sci-Fi channel showed the abyss special edition. Cameron hosted it. this is right before titanic came out. Cameron said that the abyss was his favorite at the time. he would explore water later in titanic and avatar 2.

I like reading the feedback from others about the abyss screening. both the good and bad. glad people enjoyed it for the most part.

I can't believe I never knew about this until today. If you look in the lower left, as everyone is turning around as the wave stops, one of the extras drops another's shorts. I think you can pretty much only see it in the open matte version though.

My girlfriend and I went to watch a film in NY whilst we were there and we were both shocked at the behaviour at some of the people in our screen, mostly at the couple next to us who never stopped talking. I mean if they wanted to just have a chat why didn’t they just go for a bloody drink? So infuriating. We got up to leave because we had had enough and as luck would have it saw two spare seats just at the bottom of the screen so we sat there instead.

Not to derail the thread too much, but only a young, ---hole Jim Cameron could
[Show spoiler] have a death like Kyle Reese's in a movie. He has the final heroic act, but Sarah finds him stone cold dead, eyes wide open. No speech, no I love you, just his inevitable end. It's a small note, but it's always stuck out.
Along with the lean runtime, it's still my favorite of his, and a best of the 80s.

The problem with the TITANIC thread is that there are not enough lifeboats, not enough by half!

Fortunately once he settled in it wasn’t too bad, unless he shifted in his seat or the HVAC fan turned on for a bit and rustled the air around him

I was surprised by how many laughs this movie got at my showing in Chicago. Almost all of the RomCom-ish relationship humor surrounding Bud & Lindsey landed (lines like Hippie's "Well ya probably shouldn't of married her," or Lindsey's retort of "Ask Dr. Bud advice to the lovelorn from...." or Bud fishing his ring out of the toilet, all got big laughs)

Catfish snoozing & then brandishing the potted plant during the water tentacle scene, also got a good laugh.

This bit, too...

Lindsey: "You think everything is a conspiracy."
Hippie: "Everything is."

Which likely hits different, & perhaps more humorously, in 2023 than in 1989.
