![]() CINEMA Seeing that image in bilbofett's post and all the discussion on the 4C threads... A Super-35 2.39 negative has double the resolution than a release print, and the MTF ("sharpness") should be similar to a 70mm print, apart from the grain clumps being magnified 5 times as big ;P (22mm/10mm tall = 2.2 squared = 4.85x) so a 4K scan should look pretty good. I took the data from this, transformed it from 1.85 to S-35 and 70mm, and plotted it log scale which is what photography and audiophiles use and more similar to how we perceive as opposed to linear by digital/engineers. Super 35 negative MTF (red) ![]() We add the blow-up Anamorphic lens/IP/IN/Print MTFs and we get the Super 35 release print MTF (blue). We add the projection lens MTF and we get the Super 35 print/projected (green) MTF too: ![]() But wiith a 70mm release print MTF (purple) added to compare, ![]() or if you want to, the S35 neg compared to the 70mm print projected (gold standard) MTF [Show spoiler] you can see a S35 neg is equivalent to 70mm prints. Now in reality there's also another lens that affects the image: Your eyes. I took two different eye MTFs from here and here and plotted them for aproximately 2PH viewing distance (a 30º vertical FoV) that corresponds to sitting in the middle of the theater between the front of the screen and the back of the theatre, plotted them in log and averaged the two: [Show spoiler] Adding the eye MTF to the projections gives the viewed S-35 print (black) and viewed 70mm print (silver) MTFs at 2PH ![]() As you can see 70mm as viewed is fairly less quality than what can be recorded on the S-35 neg. For those that sit at the back of the theater or at home at 4PH from the image height (15º vertical Fov) I've plotted that too. (Actually Scope ratio letterboxed in a 16:9 TV is a Fov even smaller than that, >5PH) ![]() What's interesting is that you see that at that distance the details are seen less sharp and you see less resolution than at 2PH, which brings us full circle to the image and post I quoted at the beginning of this post. A well shot S-35 neg properly scanned should look as good as what we think of as "70mm" which we only saw projected, in a big screen, apart from the grain. Which seems to be the case here: Lowryversion upscale ![]() Maybe trying to make S-35 go beyond S-35, and 70mm grain, is the operative word now. ![]() Many have tried - Reverend Mother

In this movie, Michael Biehn is a Navy SEAL, and that SEAL is covered in teal, which to me, is a teal breaker. The next post after this is going to have a reply, by me. Why? Because I am going to mention that it has teal, and that teal is plastered all over this movie, making it look more tealy. I will be back on this page in a little bit. I have to go to the ALIENS thread and talk about the teal. Oh, someone posted in TRUE LIES just now. TEAL! |

… Watching every capture in my foolish transfers game
On this endless ocean, finally lovers know no shame Turning and returning to some secret place inside Watching in slow motion as you turn around and say … Take my teal away Take my teal away … Watching, I keep waiting, still anticipating discs Never hesitating to purchase the fated ones Turning and returning to some secret place to hide Watching in slow motion as you turn to me and say … My love, take my teal away … Through the stream, I saw you In time, you slipped away When the mirror crashed, I called you And turned to hear you say If only for today, I am unafraid … Take my teal away Take my teal away … Watching every motion in this foolish transfers game Haunted by the notion somewhere there is grain in flames Turning and returning to some secret place inside Watching in slow motion as you turn my way and say … Take my teal away My love, take my teal away My love, take my teal away My love, take my teal away ![]() Last edited by Deciazulado; 12-21-2023 at 10:59 AM. |

off topic (but relevant); some excellent AI work on the TV-version of Spielberg's "DUEL", available as an extra on the disc

Then why not take your advice and for even a day stop posting constantly in these Cameron threads? I swear you're the member I see posting the most in here while saying the least.
