I dunno, the sequels are OK, and I think they're worth a look at least once.

I grew up with the original Apes movies so I love them all.

I'm a little nervous about watching it again, because I haven't seen it since I bought the DVD. I have skimmed through the recent HD versions, but I kept holding off on watching it again in hopes for a 4k transfer (before that, just a good blu-ray remaster, which never came).
With that said, not sure how much I'll like it as an old man, so far separated from the last 30+ times I watched it.

I still recommend it, because there is a lot to admire when it comes to underwater cinematography, Mary Elizabeth Masters' and Ed Harris' performances, as well as a number of other scenes. Especially the Special Edition.

I think if you like the other movies James Cameron has done, that it can be a safe bet to blind buy. It's probably good enough to be an enjoyable watch.

Beneath, Escape and Conquest are worth a watch. Conquest is my favorite Apes film.

Both Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio have gone on record saying they suffered a lot of distress during those scenes. Clearly the rat is more important to the BBFC than two humans who are still very much alive and still have to live with that trauma.

Ehhhhh. Unless we're seeing the actual footage of the two actors in literal distress and close to drowning - and we're not - then it's nowhere near the same thing.

I get standing by your product and not wanting to release it missing a scene, but clearly the ghost of Margaret Thatcher still haunts the UK. This is the same country that made "intrusive staring" at women on the tube a public offense. This is why we dumped their tea into a harbor, just a deeply flawed society.

If OG audio was readily available on most films I'd laugh at this.

Better living in a society that cuts animal cruelty than a society which has thousands of gun deaths every year.

I would not be surprised if one viewing of The Great Mouse Detective would instantly clear the scene for all eyes.

Not many people know Great Mouse Detective caused a series of mouse and rat murders committed by children and adults alike. It was all over the northeast coast news back in the day. Like Jaws before it leading to a rash of shark destruction, it should have been not released at all. Fiction is reality.

Friday the 13th and Indiana Jones were both released by the same studio

Does it really need to be openly stated that Harris and Mastrantonio had agency over themselves and chose to film those scenes of their own free will, while the rat did not?

I mean if you're going to get on your high horse and be smug about it, I live in a country that does/has neither and is consistently ranked as one of the top three countries in which to live.

I'm with ya. The setup of that final act is superb. Really grand scale stuff with good sound. I like it.

Rick Baker did the makeup and then we have the late David Warner and Michael Clarke Duncan in ape makeup and Estella Warren in skimpy clothes.

Indeed. It shouldn't even need to be explained, but it's the internet so here we are. The actors knew there were risks even though they were assured it was safe, and had an understanding of what was happening the entire time. And we don't really know what they went through. The rat was snatched up and placed in a tank of liquid against it's will and it had no understanding of the situation. It thought it was going to die.

Ensign Monk is the real villain of the movie.
