Didn't everyone vow not to complain once we hit 2024? some don't like it for various reasons and most will love it.

No. Guess you were on Santa's naughty list for tone policing too much this past year.

There are an awful lot of people who like terrible low end LCD displays set to Torch Mode.

They may like it but it does not mean that their PQ is actually very good.

With a similar mindset for a different group, there are plenty of people who like wretched transfers. It has always been the case.

Plenty of horrible transfers for DVD and many praised the DNRed, grossly incorrect color timing/grading, sharpened to halo releases. Ditto for Blu-ray.

Not exactly a strong argument by appealing to what the ill informed masses may favor. They would still want completely DNRed, farked up color grades, and sharpened garbage. Now with faux AI details.

It’s definitely in 4K DV with atmos on my Apple TV. The title on the main page even says special edition now as well.

Yeah, it's 4K. If anyone bought when it was originally the TC as the main cut, then do a disconnect btw iTunes and MA. This will port out as the SE version now. The TC copy that port out when you bought it remains, so you get both cuts in your MA library (both 4K, not sure if SE playsback in 4K though) as separate entries.

Taking early 2010’s 2k masters of movies that were shot and finished on 35mm film and upscaling them to 4k in 2024 is like the UHD equivalent of Lucas releasing 1993 laserdisc masters of the unaltered Star Wars on dvd in 2006.

Pirates, T2, American Graffiti are examples of being unwatchable though. These particular things are just not on that level. I know people try to group them all together because it's better for that aged old argument.

It's confirmed, somewhere lost in the thread. It's worth mentioning that Arrow used a 2013 scan for the Robocop UHD to great success, but alas Cameron needs all the help he can get.

Really? I'd say Aliens and True Lies are certainly on the level of American Graffiti and T2. Maybe not quite as bad, but damn it's bloody well close enough. Same ballpark.

for me the difference is I still see detail in Aliens...

There's more detail in American Graffiti compared to the old BD (especially in the highlights), but much like Aliens it comes at the expense of nearly everything else.

Robocop was a 4K master to begin with, Arrow just added an HDR grading pass. Titanic also uses the 4K master that was produced for the 2012 re-release and it by all accounts looks okay, not as good as The Abyss but leagues better than True Lies or Aliens.

Yup. Shout's UHD of The Magnificent Seven, if I recall correctly, also uses an older 4K scan and it looks fantastic.

The problem lies with Cameron's tendency to fiddle with his movies and that's why Aliens and True Lies look the way they do.

By whom? Bill Hunt (I know, I'm not supposed to invoke his name) actually spoke with Lightstorm and they confirmed that True Lies was from a recent 4k scan.

For its release on Ultra HD, Lightstorm, working with Park Road Post, has built a new 4K Digital Intermediate using recent 4K scans of the original camera negative (confirmed per Lightstorm).

Yeah, it just wouldn’t make any sense for The Abyss, one of the notable box office disappointments of its year, to receive a new 4k master while Aliens and True Lies, which were both among the biggest hits of their respective years, use recycled 2k upscales.

I can't see True Lies as a 4k scan. It's so shit and crap in presentation, I would be hard pressed to think that AI could make it THAT MUCH uglier coming from a 4k source.
But I may be wrong.

i'm p sure True Lies is a true 4K scan (especially since True Lies got a new HD master on streaming services around the same time The Abyss did and both are based on the same scan used for their UHDs), Cameron was just most likely more involved with The Abyss' presentation, doesn't help that he isn't really fond of True Lies anymore
