That's why most of the SE footage wasn't in the theatrical release in the first place.
If I remember correctly from the supplemental material on the laser disk version is that there were two issues. One was the studios mindset that movies had to be under 2 hours or no one would go see them, so there was pressure to keep it short. The other was that the CGI technology wasn’t there yet to create the tidal wave scenes.

After the success of T2 and the advancements made in CGI in T2, Cameron went back to finish The Abyss as he envisioned it. He also was able to get the cast back together to shoot additional scenes.

I remember reading that the cast of aliens came back to do the network tv version.. because the abyss was such a difficult shoot. I doubt anyone would return to do more scenes.. or just do the network tv version edit.

in 1990 Kevin Costner released Dances with Wolves.. they proved that longer films could work and later Cameron had success with titanic.

I got home and check out a bit of the abyss. I don't remember any issues.. but I need more time to look.

I have the panasonic 420.

Ordered this on Monday from Walmart, shipped from the Alliance warehouse, and it already came this morning with no damage. So much for pre-orders, huh? According to my imdb ratings, it's been almost 20 years since I watched this, always waiting for a better copy, so it should be interesting to see if I still love it.

My slipcover isn't quite mint, though, almost like it's just really old

"Abyss" has arrived and I am complete now. Also just skipped through and I think it looks great and that everyone who disagrees is a fool or didn't see the disc. Looks way better better than Titanic to me in particular. (I didn't take a look at "True Lies" yet, which arrived today as well, but I also don't really care about "True Lies".)

With others posting photos, I also agree that this one deserves a (even if piss poor smartphone) group photo. And I'll surely keep the DVD as well.

I love my CD collection as I love my movie collection. And while I have the music all ripped (opposed to the movies because disk sizes), I actually still listen to the CDs. Over my dead body as they say.

offtopic, bu I also just took a look at "True Lies" and great isn't what I'd use for this one. Might watch it over Spain anyway.

Speaking of Spain, with all the new Cameron 4K releases and with the look by now surely not only being a result of the 3D, I eventually also grabbed a T2 4K release and I will also watch it over the LionsGate BD. Shocked. I certainly won't call it great either, but I also won't die on a "watching a poor BD instead" hill - especially if the director obviously approves and I can file it under remaster. Would I prefer a filmic T2? You bet. Can I go back to piss poor colours, less detail and nothing really filmic either? Nope.

Oh, not sure if mentioned already, but Abyss is MEL and True Lies FEL. If I had to guess, FEL plus seamless branching would be something.

I have no time to rewind if this review was already posted. If it was and you did take the time to watch it, don't worry and skip it to the next post. Life's good.

I received my copy from Walmart this afternoon. The disc looks perfect (no scratches). The only annoyance is these stupid stickers they stick right on the slipcover instead of putting it on the plastic wrapping.

Please forgive me for my spreading of lies and misinformation. I finally had the idea to run a stereo downmix of the 5.1 on the Blu-ray and compare it to the 2.0 on the 4K, and it would appear that the 2.0 on the 4K is in fact a downmix of the 5.1 on the BD. However - H O W E V E R - the 5.1 on the Blu-ray is actually 4.1, with duplicated mono surrounds, as I pointed out further up thread, so as long as they encoded it as Dolby Surround, it should be a fair approximation of the original mix. (minus the noise reduction and EQ and brickwall limiting and yadayadayada) Unfortunately I have no idea how to tell that. I don't know how to decode a Dolby Surround track on a computer.
Just to confirm. The UHD 2.0 mix is a downmix of the BD's 5.1 (4.1) mix?

Is this a Walmart exclusive for a period of time? Not available from my usual US sellers on eBay, I’m in the UK. Thanks

Watched this on my UBPX800 and it played flawlessly no break up or skipping.

The film looks great in 4K no negatives from me. The audio was lacking LFE but it's a fun surround mix.

Nice. Looking forward to watching mine ASAP. I only got to check out 20 minutes of Aliens and was blown away. I hope he does Terminator and makes it look as good as Aliens.

Well there is no individual Blu-ray release so you don't have an option there (I mean you could watch the BD included with the UHD but why would you want an inferior experience?) and definitely the Special Edition.
