Has this ever dropped below the $38.99 price tag ? It’s been out for a while so I thought the price may have dropped a bit by now ?

It was $24.96 for a long time around launch. I've never seen it go below that on Amazon.

I mean, check more retailers? Quick Google brings up Deep Discount for $30 (backordered) and eBay for $34.

It's funny but for me the movie never went away. I dipped into the 2-disc DVD every now and then if only for the utterly superb extras, and whenever an HD version appeared on the high seas I'd obtain it. The HDTV version of the Lowry remastered theatrical cut appeared like 10 years ago, then Croweyes did his amazing SE reconstruction of it, so I've been able to scratch that itch, you know? Same with True Lies, whenever I've wanted to watch it then the DVHS rip did the trick.

But I am still VERY glad they've both made it onto official BD/UHD releases at long last, it's just so ironical that when they did finally appear Cameron applied his AI special sauce! Thankfully The Abuse is easily the bestest looking one of the lot IMO.

To me the most bizarre thing is that at least in the US, two different DVD releases occurred. Both were that same god awful non-anamorphic transfer, but the 2002 re-issue omitted the 5.1 audio. My guess is due to the branching glitches that affected that track (and most of which carried over to specifically the Atmos track) and that Fox's way of fixing it at the time is only including the 2.0 track which didn't have said glitches. Thankfully the 2.0 track on the 4K disc doesn't have said glitches either and it's fortunately easy to just simply brush it off as another botched Atmos track issue.

The 59 minute documentary Under Pressure: Making The Abyss is simply amazing. I heard a few things about the challenges they faced in making this movie, but I had no idea just how incredibly difficult it actually was to get it made. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite behind the scenes pieces I’ve ever watched, and it's given me a deeper appreciation for a movie that I already thought was great. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should definitely do so as soon as possible.

Very solid BTS hailing from the Special Edition days of The Abuse. Like Wreckage and Rage, Dangerous Days, or pretty much everything on the original Aluminum-sleeved T2 DVD package, I have watched it multiple times over the years. Compared to modern random pontification and a parade of talking heads, the time of really good special features seems to have passed.

It's been about a year since I last saw the Special Edition of the film, so I decided to watch it today. Man this movie doesn't disappoint.

Of all of Cameron's non Avatar filmography, this one is probably the best looking on 4K Blu-ray. I'd probably list them as The Abyss, Titanic, The Terminator, Aliens, True Lies, and T2. I'm pretty forgiving of the AI treatments if I'm being honest, but I have no misgivings towards anyone who feels differently.

I watched the 5.1 of the standard Blu muxed to the 4K, and that mix is honestly a stunner. There's admittedly not a lot of bass, but this film really isnt trying to push down the hertz. Its mostly more the ambiance than anything else, but it does get plenty full sounding during action scenes or when the orchestra sways.

I've never seen the theatrical version, but I can't imagine the film working without the Russia plot and the tidal wave scenes. This film, like every other Cameron movie, is about love. Bud's s sacrifice for his love is ultimately what saves the day, and knowing the behind the scenes about Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd's divorce only hits this point home even more. You can definitely feel the animosity between Bud and Lindsey, but at the same time you can tell that these two haven't forgotten how much they cared for each other.

Say what you will about how much Cameron has changed since the films release, but I really do think its telling when the man's near entire filmography is considered some of the greatest films of all time. Yeah he can be obtuse about many things, but the man is truly a creative genius who's ability in filmmaking is largely unrivaled.

Went to watch this last night, and the disc flat out refused to read on my Panasonic DP-UB820. It played fine a year ago when I first got it. No stuttering or freezing, just 'cannot read disc'.

Anyone else have this issue?
