All I'm gonna say is I agree with Cameron on this one. The rat scene adds to the movie. It's a preview of Ed Harris doing it later. I wouldn't cut it either. It's unfortunate that people will have to pay more to import it, but at least it isn't like the old days where discs were region locked.

I can't believe they allow people to be shown eating flesh on film with that absurd law...

Both Theatrical Cut and Special Edition playback now is in HD
It's listed as 4K HDR in my library but not when you click play

When I purchased a few weeks ago the Theatrical Cut playback was 4K Dolby Vision it's now changed to HD
Special Edition listed in extras also still is HD that's not changed
It’ll be back. It usually happens when they’re fixing something. Perhaps they’re getting ready to add 4K for the SE copy in the extras.

I don't feel like the scene in question garnered this much attention when the movie was initially released. That's the internet for you...

If Cameron doesn't want to acquiesce to a cut version then the responsibility ultimately lies with him. Once upon a time he personally recut True Lies to get a 15 certificate for it, and with today's tech I'm sure they could've zoomed and finagled that scene in The Abuse a lot betterer than they did on the old cut version, but El Cameroon doesn't want to know.
I don't see why they don't just replace every shot of the actual rat with a CGI double, that would be an absolute piece of piss.

Yes, and I already pointed out other examples in an earlier post of mine where harm to animals was allowed to pass uncut (Friday the 13th, The Wild Bunch).

I'm not arguing in favour of the law or saying that it's not inconsistent, just pointing out that it's not as easy as someone "letting it slide and posting a disclaimer".

Because it literally affects one single country, and I'm sure Cameron really couldn't give a shit if it's available in the UK or not if his experiences filming Aliens are anything to go by.

He obviously doesn't want to mess with the integrity of the film. He's a real stickler for not messing with the original appearance of his films.

You dont mess with our tea-breaks, if the tea lady says, "Tea's up, luvvies," at ten-thirty.

Then. Tea. Is. Up.

It doesn't matter what you’re doing, get it done by break-time, if you're in the middle of something that's on you, the studio light goes off and the gates of Tetley open. Grizzly Adams should have known the score.

There's been some very weird xenophobic rantings about an issue that does not affect anyone outside the UK.

Anyway, from this 2017 minutes you get the impression that the BBFC tried to have the cuts waived, but for the RSPCA advice that it would still contravene the law.

boc-minutes-16-11-17.pdf

Quote:
5. In 1989, following advice from the RSPCA, the BBFC cut a sequence from
THE ABYSS in which a rat is submerged in liquid and forced to take that
liquid into its lungs. The film is currently available in an uncut and unrated
version on Netflix. Mr Mashiah showed the scene from The ABYSS for the
consideration of the Board.

6. The issue for consideration was whether in the Board's view, the sequence
contravened The Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act 1937. Specifically
whether it was "organised or directed" for the purpose of the film in a way that
involved cruelty to the rats (five of which were used in the sequence). The
RSPCA's advice was that it did contravene the act.

7. The Board considered the legal test and concluded that it could not waive the
entirety of the 1989 cut, but that the extent of the cuts could be reduced.

It's ALWAYS been a bone of contention in the UK. Cameron even mentions the cut in the 'Under Pressure' documentary which was made, let's remind ourselves, in the early 1990's. Then when the film premiered on British television on Channel 4 they mistakenly / sneakily aired the full version with the rat scene intact and it caused a whole brouhaha.

So this issue is not a new development or an internet creation.

UK Peeps - Remember, this still hasn't been confirmed by any real source. Every article is quoting Bill Hunt / Digital Bits.

[Show spoiler]Have any of your pre-orders actually been canceled? Only seen convo about the scene itself and the law that makes it an issue.

Edit: Ignore spoiler question. Incorrect.

There is no UK pre orders for a 4K release of the Abyss with any UK retailers as it has not been announced for a UK release

You can't cancel a pre order when no orders exist as it has not ever been available to pre order in UK
