The film is undergoing a change in the store which is believed to be swapping the main feature to the SE and the theatrical as the iTunes extra version. At the moment it is playing the SE as both main feature and extra.

Just an FYI for those who may have purchased this digitally before the disc release.

At the moment You have to goto the store and select play from store to get Special Edition in 4K
If you click special edition in extras that's HD

If you click play from your library you get theatrical cut in HD and Special edition in extras HD
Library versions not been fixed yet

Regarding the teal debate…It’s amazing that a color that did not exist 10,000 years ago has come to dominate so much of our conversation in the 21st century.

Will the extras option for the Special Edition on Vudu and iTunes upgrade to 4k? Or are 'bonus features' always limited to 2k?

itunes switched over and has made the main version the special edition in 4K,

But they could potentially make the extras in 4K on Vudu, other movies have had their extra cut available in 4K.

I have the apple app for both Roku and Ps4, They now show The Abyss special edition in 4k and Dolby Atmos.

On a serious note, I wonder if that would solve the UK problem. You technically wouldn't be watching a live rat any more and therefor it wouldn't technically violate the rules.

I know they won't and a lot of people would be outraged by the change itself, but still.

The UK version would more than likely have Roland Rat rather than Jerry or Mickey.
I don’t mind dear old Roland, but I can imagine plenty of UKers would enjoy seeing him dumped into that fluid.

No, not through apple. Other retailers are still the theatrical in 4K.

no.. not on the apple app.. you can see the theatre version on vudu and movie anywhere. Most people prefer the special edition.

That kinda sucks! Goofy that when I went to play it through iTunes, it has a menu selection for "Play" and "Play Special Edition" that take you to the Special Edition only.

Not at home to check, but are both versions available through MA? Looks like I could play the theatrical cut through from MA.

Good news! Bill Hunt just posted on TheDigitalBits that the movie's Special Edition is now available as a separate movie on Apple TV and in 4K! Those who purchased it initially will also get a copy.

That’s not exactly what’s happening on iTunes. Apple decided to change the listing to have the Special Edition be the main feature (in 4K), but the SE is listed in the Extras (plays back in HD). So far, the change doesn’t let you play the TC at the moment. The purchase will still port the TC to MA. So, they don’t have two separate listing of the SE and TC.
