Yikes, hopefully you still got a nice gift for your birthday. It seems like prices today are high, but in comparison to trying to buy movies when they first came out back then? it's relatively on the cheap side today...

Jeez. The T2 LaserDisc CAV Box Set retailed for $125. What a rip-off, even at VHS "rental" pricing!

I think there was a thought that the rental tapes (in the UK they were around £80 for a rental copy) were built a bit sturdier than our retail ones (not sure if the internals were beefier, it didnt help folks rewinding their favourite scenes and leaving a mark), but I think they were hiked to offset the loss of retail purchases. Video stores had to rent them a good few hundred times to see a return (our retail tapes were around ten pounds in the mid-nineties) on their tapes.

From what I remember from my VHS purchasing days, the retail tapes weren't any different from the rental ones as far as build quality. Once in a while there'd be a gimmick tape, like ET having a green tape cover (the part that slides upwards when inserting a VHS tape).

It was a "big deal" when Star Trek II was released for "low" $39.95 in 1982. This was considered a sell-thru item! That would be $126.14 in today's money (and people complain about 4K retail pricing!).

Most rental prices went anywhere from $79.99 to $99.99, I don't recall any going for $150 though - even the guys at places like Sam Goody (which charged full retail for most of their stuff...or higher) would be like "Damn!"

That bit in T2 where the T-1000 is handed the photo of John and he says, "He's a good-looking boy. Do you mind if I keep this picture?" What exactly did Jim Cameron mean by this!?

This. Folks can buy TWELVE 4k uhd sets on Black Friday for $9.99 each, for the cost of ONE video forty years ago, and they still whine about the "outrageous uhd pricing"

In the year 1992? Normal. In the year 2024? Gross. Disgusting. Utter Hell. Jim literally put his true desire into the film. I will never buy it again.

That film didn't reflect correct prevalent modern social attitudes. Boycotted!

If you are really curious about its true meaning, Google “10 year old” followed by “boy ass”.

Surprised Paxton didn’t throw in a “Chef Boy-Ass-Dee!”
