"If you’re a longtime fan of The Abyss, and you’re familiar with the Special Edition version of the film on LaserDisc and DVD, you’ll know that the DVD release included audio errors in its dialogue and music (in the SE’s Dolby Digital 5.1 mix only—the 2.0 track was okay) that were introduced by seamless branching.

At about 16:38 into the Theatrical Cut, Bud asks Lindsey, “So what are you doing down here, Hotrod?”

But in the Special Edition, this dialogue is slightly different. At 20:36, Bud says, “You know, I can’t believe you were dumb enough to come down here and now you’re stuck here for the storm. That was dumb, Hotrod. Real dumb.” To which Lindsey replies, “I didn’t come down here to fight with you.” And that causes Bud to say, “Yeah, well… then why did you come down?”

Except that in the DVD version of the Special Edition via seamless branching, that last line “Yeah, well… then why did you come down?” was actually replaced by his line from the Theatrical Cut: “So what are you doing down here, Hotrod?” It was an awkward conversational turn, made all the more weird because you could see that Bud was still mouthing his SE line.

And near the end of the Special Edition, at about 2:39:22 in the 5.1 mix, there was an odd shift in the tone of the score caused by the branching as well.

Again, these were errors introduced in the DVD authoring process, and they’re something that the folks at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment always meant to correct when they released the film on Blu-ray. Except that never happened… and then Fox got purchased by Disney, all the Fox Home Entertainment people got laid off, and nobody at Disney had any awareness of the audio errors.

So when the production team at the mastering and authoring vendor working on the new 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release of the film finished the new Special Edition presentation last year, they used the DVD branching as a guide... and these same audio errors crept into the new Atmos mix on the 4K SE master.

But here’s where the story turns positive...

A sharp-eared Digital Bits reader who goes by the name of SuperDan on Twitter went to the 4K remastered Special Edition theatrical screening of the film back on December 6th. He noticed that the audio errors were still there, and messaged me privately on Twitter to alert me of it when he walked out of the theater.

And the good news is, I have contacts directly involved in the 4K remastering and disc authoring work on all of these new James Cameron titles. So I was able to alert the team right away, and they flagged the errors for QC to check out. Turns out, QC did confirm the errors. And luckily, they hadn’t sent the discs off to replication yet, so they were able to pull the audio stems and correct the mix in the Special Edition master.

I mention this now because, just yesterday, I received confirmation privately that the audio errors have indeed been fixed for the new physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release. They should be corrected soon in the 4K Digital masters as well (the HD Digital masters were corrected long ago).

Suffice it to say, The Digital Bits may have just saved Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment the headache and embarrassment of the errors not having been caught, not to mention the significant cost of a disc recall and replacement program."

Like I said in my previous post, I was waiting to later this morning to pre-order The Abyss and True Lies at Target so i could order it with Fear The Walking Dead Season 8 because I wanted to try for the $10 circle reward and i didn't have the money to get an extra gift card until today to pay for the third thing. Plus I would have to pay extra for shipping with Fear by itself.

When I saw that the Abyss sold out yesterday, I quickly pre-ordered True Lies with Fear Season 8.Glad i did. I'm still getting the extra gift card for Target in case The Abyss goes back up for pre-order before Amazon's pre-order page goes live. I've seen pre-orders go out of stock for a period and then come back up for pre-order at Target. But if it doesn't, then i really hope Amazon's pre-order page goes live in a few days.

Again, this is another instance where losing Best Buy hurts. One less major retailer selling it and quite honestly i probably would of pre-ordered these there since right off the bat, I have free shipping. I wouldn't of bothered trying to pre-order Fear Season 8 with something else to get free shipping to begin with even with Target having that $10 circle reward. Since these are pre-orders, not sure I would of even qualified.

Just a heads up, if you got your order in at target before the sold out I would still expect a wait. They are not great about that situation. I got the raid 4k in day one and it sold out and I’m back ordered til mid February.

If you go over to the DMC thread, you will find much help there. The base option does operate like the CD clubs you mention, but they have a code in that thread (the "Encanto" code) that bypasses all of that and gets you a movie at $10, then you're good to order what you want. Search that up in the thread and you'll find everything you need.

Target I find is always a little slower getting orders out. Whenever I've pre-ordered a physical release from Target, it always arrives a few days to usually a week after release date for me.Which is fine for me.I don't mind waiting an extra few days. I just want to know I'll get it.

I couldn't find the link there either until you posted it but I really do not want to pre-order from Walmart if i can help it.

1)I'll have to go out of my way to buy a gift card and I just can't get up to the closest Walmart to me until early next week. This is the big problem for me with Walmart as I've talked about in other threads. Every other retailer i can get gift cards anywhere near me but Walmart gift cards are only sold in Walmarts and the closed the Walmart that was close to me three years ago. One of the reasons(I used to have just this one but now I have two reasons) that I hate that Walmart is the one picking up the slack from Best Buy with the steelbook exclusives.

I just got an extra Target gift card to get it there if the pre-order goes back up at Target.

I can't get to the closest Walmart to get another gift card from them until next week.I've got Walmart gift cards coming my way for my birthday but not yet. Walmart is not a good option for me with this release.

2)I'm having all kinds of headaches with the pre-orders i do have right now with Walmart,I have four upcoming exclusive on pre-order at Walmart and I'm not confident any of them will reach me right now for reasons I've talked about in other threads. I don't trust pre-ordering from Walmart's site right now until I'm sure these movies reach me.

The only reason I'm pre-ordering anything from Walmart is because I'm being forced to in order to get the exclusives that Best Buy would of gotten. I'm dreading having to pre-order the Dune Part 2 steelbook from them.By the time that's announced,I'll know if three of my pre-orders get sent to me. Two come out on 2/13 and one on 2/27.

The Abyss is a standard release and i rather not pre-order anything from Walmart unless it's a exclusive release.

Correct. In-store is still present as they sell off existing stock, but nothing new is coming in. (One of the employees confirmed this for me) Once your local store is out, it's permanent. Mine still has stock, though it gets smaller each week.

Pro tip if you are not a Walmart+ customer like me you can do your preorder with other store items like toothpaste or whatever you might need to achieve the $35 minimum for free shipping on the preorder. At the store you can just ‘decide against’ the items if you don’t need them to get a refund and since the preorder is locked in with the free shipping. It won’t change that, so free shipping remains.
