Happily preordered all three Cameron 4Ks from Atomic without batting an eye. I purchased the Amazon stream back in December and really enjoyed revisiting the film. It was a bit jarring going from non-anamorphic DVD quality straight to 4K but it was a fun revisit. Looked great IMO. March 12th will be an epic week.

I refuse to suffer the Canadian bilingual packaging on this one, so I'm more than happy to wait and pick it up the next time I'm in the States, around May of this year.

As of right now, No.The only way to get the film on Blu Ray is in this release.

I am going to apply to Disney to be a cover artist for their releases. I will take an iconic theatrical poster and throw it away. Then I will take 3-5 of the film’s stars and photoshop their heads on an overbright scene not in the movie. I will make the star I think is most famous and make that head the largest and make the size of the other heads a little smaller depending on my assessment of the corporations agreement of popularity.

Don't forget to minimize the POC for the China releases...

I never bothered with a multi-region player as most of what I want is either available here or is region free anyway.
It’s Disney. And they’ve been doing Region Free releases for a while now, although they did point out they liked the option to lock discs during the HD format wars (HD DVD, like UHD BD, for all intents and purposes, was Region Free). Fox also pointed out they would prefer to support BD due to the ABC region coding.

BTW, does the iTunes 4K file look DNR’d to wax figure proportions or did JC actually show some restraint with The Abyss (unlike Aliens)?

I’ll see if my local crack dealer can sort me out a copy of The Abyss, we’ll do a shifty deal in the pub car park, real dodgy like.

The Abyss is much better than Aliens. I simply cannot watch Aliens in it's current form (although some don't hate it, so YMMV) but The Abyss looks great. You can still see the AI at work and it's too sharp, but it's closer to the Titanic end of James Cameron's AI spectrum.

By George I think you've got it! James Cameron is on the spectrum!

No, by George, you’re thinking of Lucas. Cameron’s just got your regular inflated ego. Which is fair when you made T2 and The Abyss. He’s cool, he’s earned it. I roll my eyes at his jumping on the AI fad but I’m still going to be there opening night for Avatars 3-6 or whatever.

It will be region free as Disney haven’t locked in well over a decade but if that was a worry you could always get a euro release, Coolshop.co.uk have one for £26 delivered.

Are you talking about the UHD or the blu-ray of Aliens? I think the blu-ray looks fine, except the colour tinting feels off.

Is that because the DVD is not enhanced for 16x9, and you have that black frame around the image?

I have the double disc "Special Edition" version on DVD, and it says The Abyss IS enhanced for widescreen TV's - which it isn't. However... it's "partially" enhanced! It never played "enhanced" on any of my DVD players, but on one of my Blu-Ray players... it DOES playback enhanced!! I don't know why, and it's the only "letterboxed" movie it does that with. I don't know where the upscaling is occurring (the player, the receiver or the 4K TV???) , but it looks REALLY GOOD for a DVD!

That said, I've been waiting for it to be released on Blu-Ray (my dad, too... but sadly, he died 10 years ago)... but now we're getting a 4K release!!

BTW... I was hoping to find info on whether there's a steelbook version of this (as well as, True Lies & Aliens) being issued (preferably, in the U.S.)... but this thread has OVER 100 pages. I am not reading all those pages, and I don't want to start another Abyss thread (although, if there's a steelbook of The Abyss being released ANYWHERE... there "should" be a thread for it)!
