This bugs me, too. I hate buying a 4k UHD and getting a blu-ray with the purchase. Waste of my time.
Just give away the 4k UHD. It's free with the purchase of your blu-ray. Don't sell it or anything at any of those many places that you can sell it at. Give it away. Or better yet, just toss it in the trash.
Where it belongs.
Like slipcovers.

Correct. From UK, I find I can't pre-order from Amazon France and Germany, they only unlock very close to release day or post release. However, Spain and Italy, let me order in advance.

Very rarely are dual format 4K releases meaningfully higher priced than standalone 4K. I actually prefer getting 4K and Blu in the same package since it's more convenient for extras. Not to mention, the only way I'm able to play 4K discs is on my home setup and I really don't care for digital copies (I'd rather rip the Blu-ray and do my own high bitrate encode).

$24 is a good deal whether it was single format only, anyways.

I asked a question two/three days ago but for some reason my post has yet to be approved?

I'm in the UK and don't have a 4K player yet. Can anyone clarify/confirm if the Blu-ray discs will be region-free (if purchased from the likes of WOWHD and Amazon US etc)?
I was under the impression that Disney releases usually are region free (the back cover of the Abyss shows ABC) but does that guarantee the discs will be region free? Peace of mind would be great.

Thank you

I don't think anything is guaranteed until we have the disc in hand, but that ABC on the back cover is probably as close as we'll get until then.

Guarantee was probably too strong of a word but I appreciate your reply.

Apologies. I missed that but doesn't hurt to hammer home the point that it will be region-free.

Thanks

Take this with a grain of salt but Disney is apparently going to be carefully looking at sales figures for all three Cameron films' 4K premieres next month to gauge interest and decide whether or not to open the vaults for other back catalog films. I kind of already figured this was going to be the case after Bob Iger's comments last year but I was hoping the studio wouldn't hinge further forays into physical media on these sales numbers and instead just release a decent slate of popular titles (that aren't JC movies) based off of their apparent change of heart alone. These Cameron films should do very well on their own so I'm not too concerned but there's an awful lot of people voicing disappointment on these forums alone. I never advocate for people to spend hard-earned money on movies they don't want but in this case I'm hoping people grab at least one of these just to pump the numbers and improve our chances for more stuff.

That's a nice dream.
To sleep, perchance to dream, aye there's the rub!

I have no doubt that these three titles will be some of the biggest catalogue title sellers in YEARS. So that's good to hear.
I sure hope the success won't encourage the AI crap though.

Ahh yes, to dream. Maybe it's indicative of my inner cynic being alive and well, but these usually turn into stressful nightmares, no matter how peaceful they start.

The abyss is outselling both true lies and aliens. It's been number 1 on the preorders from amazon and this site. Its been one of the most requested films for blu ray and 4k since it was missing in action the last 24 years (dvd release)

Maybe help catalogs and most requested titles as well.

I do find it a funny prospect to use THE ABYSS, and TRUE LIES finally being released to 4k as a barometer for the success of future releases by Disney. These titles are a very unique set of circumstances that aren't comparable to the majority of other potential future releases.

THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES haven't had bona-feed-eh(?) releases on physical media for 2 decades plus. These movies are well liked, and would have sold well at any point in the past. But they were held back. So many have been waiting several years to acquire a copy of them.

"But what about the AI ugliness?", some may ask. I wager that at least 70% of buyers are not that picky about the look of these releases. They will love these transfers, just because they know it's the best because "It's in 4k!"
A good percentage will think these look amazing (Yes, even TRUE LIES) and that's fine. I think the regular viewer - and even those that know what they're seeing yet still accept it for what it is - will be happy with the transfers.
Other customers will be most excited knowing that these are better quality than DVD they bought before their kids were born.

However... if I was analyzing the potential profits for future 4k UHD older movie releases, I would state up front that the James Cameron triple-release should NOT be used to confirm or deny the success or failure of moving forward with other movies. These are their own entity, and should be respected and treated as such. Try at least a couple dozen other catalogue titles that are well liked, and use THOSE to find a potential (mathematical) mean for success in continuing sales of older titles.
