Depending on what they're using for upcoming theatrical re-release and how they're projecting it I'm not sure if that should be used as a gauge for what the Blu-ray/4K will ultimately look like. I think we'll have to form our opinions when we have the discs in-hand. To be honest I wasn't impressed with that Youtube promo. Looked way too clean but, then again, I've never relied on internet clips as the end-all be-all for PQ. My own eyes are the ultimate judge.

I also re-encoded the trailer (in Handbrake: Slower preset, 10 RF) which reduced the file size from 1.9 GB to 315 MB. Might make it easier to play on your system. Video will be compressed, obviously, but less than YouTube. Audio is untouched.

Well yeah... that was my point, that it sticks out like a sore thumb. This obviously doesn't look as consistently DNR'd as T2 for example, but the LOTR approach of selective use is not a whole lot better.

To me it looks to be more slightly out-of-focus than being heavy DNRd.

We're also looking at down-rezzed compressed 1080p video so one should keep that in mind but even through all of that I am still seeing some grain.

I downloaded and watched the ProRes trailer and I don't think this is gonna be some wax fest. I mean I'm gonna temper my expectations (and am kinda worried for how Titanic will turn out ngl) but I'm not hating what I see here.

Yup, there is that plasticene look which is common with the current crop of special sauce DNR. Quite similar to T2 but better.
Could even see that sh!t3 in the YT upload.

I am referring specifically around her mouth and lower jaw area. Same for her forehead.

Aliens is going to look similar. Well at least it will look better than T2.




Helicopter rotors always futzes up the algorithms.



While watching this shot, one can see the DNR processing having difficulty locking down the original grain structure which exposes it for us to see.
Look at the boundary of the upper part of Bud's head to observe what I am referring.



Wonder if the sharpening is inherent to this new transfer or just for the trailer.

Anyhow, it at least looks rather decent and superior to T2.

Never use trailers as reference as more often than not they were created before editing and color timing was completed

This is James Cameron, so I think that everyone should have been well aware of his love for tinkering and revisionism, in DNR and in color timing.

Even with the issues though, it looks good (within what is possible considering the circumstances above), and even the YouTube trailer is already a massive improvement on the DVD.

That's the half-full cup perspective.

I just hope that Cameron hasn’t decided to go full Lucas with revisionism though. Cameron talking about big surprises waiting us makes me a bit worried.

The big surprises line folks are concerned about sounds more of a reference to the Special Edition being released to theaters versus the original Theatrical Cut.
