My favorite article in Starlog was a deconstruction of the time travel logic in Back to the Future -- I think it was called, "The Other Marty McFly" -- and talked about how the Marty that grew up with the "fixed" parents might have traded places with the Marty from the broken version. Fun stuff to chew on as a kid.

It's great when you come across stuff like that. In an old, old issue of American Cinematographer there's a letter from Joe Dante pedantically correcting some info on one movie or another that was published in the last issue, it's great

I have the issue that covered The Abyss. Those photos of the miniatures being prepped for filming! It's a great resource and document of a different kind of visual effects than what we have now. I shall have to read it again before the disc release.

But will Sony have more say over the restoration of Disney and Fox's classics and the release of said classics and blockbusters languishing at Disney on 4k disc?



If yes, then this is a MAJOR plus for collectors.



Plus, Sony does a MUCH better job with Atmos remixes.

Doubt they'll do anything other than distribute what they're given.

Well, it keeps the prospect of physical media alive. There was a guy ranting about a month ago about how Disney's home video division is dead. I'm not one to jump to conclusions, and it looks like this deal is why things were quiet for a while. I just hope that classics like Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia come out soon.

I've been waiting for this since Y2K! Bought the non-anamorphic DVD, hated the presentation, and took it straight to the used media shop. I haven't been this excited for a UHD release since Criterion put out Dazed and Confused.

People who have seen "The Abyss," "True Lies," and "Aliens" (since they are on Kaleidescape already and KScape is as good or a little better than disc image-wise) say they are maybe an uptick from the T2 disaster, but nothing film-like as "Titanic" where Cameron and Co. weren't quite so aggressive with the degraining and AI image manipulation... yes, it was futzed with too, but not to the point where you are looking at a living wax museum.

"Aliens," by far, fairs the worst of the bunch and may be more similar to T2 than not.

Get ready for a lot of grumbling.

I seriously doubt that. T2 was a different situation. And the grumbling began as soon as these were announced, which is why I've mostly stayed away from these threads. One word I've seen people use to describe the overall quality (of Abyss, at least) is "jarring", which sounds about right. I sure was "jarred" by how good Abyss looked on that 4K Amazon stream back in December. I'm almost certain the 4K disc will look even better and I refuse to believe True Lies and Aliens will be abominations on the format. Kind of amusing how so many have already made their minds up that these will be a disaster when the discs aren't even out yet.
