Is the streaming version of The Abyss on Hulu currently from this new restoration? If it is, I really have no interest in owning it. I dislike the look of these new masters. If any director or studio or films continue to get released with this processed, modernized look I won’t be supporting it. Just doesn’t do it for me, it’s too cold and there’s just something missing - seems artificial. Not what was put on camera. That’s just me, I can see people loving this with their new displays and set ups. I have a friend who despises grain so he will love these new restorations. Not for me.

I stopped watching his reviews a while back. I had to watch them at super fast speed just to make his speech seem normal - and then constantly had to skip through the parts that he repeats in every review. Who has time to watch his reviews - it takes an eternity lol.

It's the same version. There are brief reviews on another forum by Robert Harris who claims he likes the new look and that no information is missing.

But I'm with you, it just looks 'digital' and wrong. Yuck.

One problem (if you can call it that) in these new masters is that the grain field is SO fine that you really can't capture it via streaming. There absolutely is grain here, but it's not going to show up via Hulu. You need either Kaleidescape or the disc to judge this properly IMHO. Just based on the YouTube vs. ProRes trailer last year, the difference in compressed vs uncompressed is even further exacerbated than usual when grain is rendered as fine as it is in these new transfers. Streaming still has some pretty egregious limitations, and these Cameron discs are making those limitations clearer (or waxier, if you will) than ever before.

Naturally anyone here is going to tell you it's worth buying. We're fans of the film. YMMV

The maligned Youtube reviewer mentioned previously said this same thing. I guess we will all find out in a few days. I haven't seen this movie in 30+ years, so I'm looking forward to it either way...

Deromax, you are also right. It is getting harder to buy locally. In a few countries Fnac stopped selling DVD / BR. Virgin Megastore and Hmv closed down. I remember many years ago going to virgin Megastore in Hmv after work to buy Blu-Ray's. Specially the day new releases came out. It is super satisfying to have the physical item in your hands.

Today you can only count on online purchases. But unfortunately Amazon doesn't care how to pack things well. My last three Amazon BR orders arrived destroyed. Sent wrapped in a Prime white and blue plastic bag. I returned all orders so they see what they did. I complained about the packaging. But each time I place a new order they do the same s....t mistake. They are too big now they don't care. I'm their customer for over 25 years. It's not only the seller fault studios also use bad packaging and then the items get damaged in transit. As an example those stupid idiotic crappy eco cases... everybody hates them.

Many less know films are now OOP so second hand is the only option. I stoped to buy DVD's when the Blu-Ray's came out.

I am super glad I purchased a zone Free BR player. I own Blu-Ray's from all continents.

You know, I was just thinking that this thread was seriously lacking in teal complaints recently. Thanks for correcting this shortcoming, Mike... erm, socky, uh... I mean, random recent forum-joiner.
