I'm probably going to spend the first viewing of each of these discs picking out what looks good and what looks wonky - not the way I want to spend my time but I think I'm still going to be fairly entertained during my armchair analysis since this won't be a T2/Predator (pre-reissue) or Mutant (1984) situation where extreme waxiness/rubbery-ness will cause a large enough distraction that I'll have a headache afterwards. The issue here isn't smeariness or lack of detail, it's too much detail obtained unnaturally to the point where it may or may not be distracting. Again, not an ideal situation but, IMO, still preferable to excessive DNR use and resulting lack of detail. I'll take these revisions over a quarter century old DVDs.

I wish I could erase everything I've seen in these JC threads. I wonder how many issues would go unnoticed if I wasn't made aware of them.

Anyway, I don't want to derail The Abyss thread because it really does look great aside from looking a little processed. But Aliens and True Lies have a lot of more problems in motion beyond having too much detail and/or DNR.

Based off of the recent theatrical run last December i honestly don't remember reading any negative comments about it, having said that i can't wait to see the same 2 or 3 here saying the ancient DVD is better.

I haven't seen any negative comments about The Abyss here either nor anyone claiming the DVD is better. The Special Edition Laserdisc on the other hand...

When I saw the theatrical screening of The Abyss last year I was paying special attention to certain points that were easy to remember from the ProRes trailer and the problematic DNR examples were clear as day in the screening.

They are also present in the digital streams as well.
I doubt that the physical release will be an outright improvement, since those issues were present in the DCP.

That said, this new transfer is the absolute best that The Abyss has ever looked for home viewing and the best of the bunch of JC catalog.

Has anyone's order from DiabolikDVD shipped out yet? I've never used them before and I am sure they are reputable but when something hasn't shipped by the Friday before a release I get a little nervous haha

Had Diabolik received their stock, your order would have shipped already, but the distributor has been delayed getting stock to retailers. There’s more posts about it upthread. It should only be a matter of a few or so days.

Yeah, I’ve resigned myself to getting my Diabolik order at some point next week. Everyone will have this within a week or two, so NBD. I’ve waited this long. I’d rather know that 1. I’m supporting a private site that cares about their customers, and 2. the disc will be packaged well and arrive to me without damage.

Yeah, seeing all of the different opinions about the look of a disc before I have it in my hands can mess with my head a little. There are those here whom I eventually wind up agreeing with more than others. Of course, nothing beats actually seeing it for yourself. I'm certainly no expert, but I know when the look of a movie is distracting and when it isn't.

I appreciate the honest information given about these discs for those having seen them in motion. It helps knowing if I need to prepare myself for disappointment or not. I expect "The Abyss" to be the better looking of the three discs based on the information given. It's just a shame we can't get a movie that clearly looks great to everyone who views it. I mean, these three films (especially "Aliens") are among my all time favorites. I can't believe those who are responsible don't know how to make these suckers look great by now.

Here where the problem is, the content creator will do what they think is best to them, not you and me. What we think after becomes pretty much irrelevant to them, how many times one listened to the few in the crowd (i say few because the average joe outside here wont even notice the differences) and went back and redid all the work again ?

Not sure how reliable this guy is but...he is seeing quite an improvement in the UHD vs Digital. Mentions a "thin layer of film grain throughout".

I know many of these Youtubers can't find their a$$ with a funnel (for all I know he could be watching it on a 13inch Emerson combo 4k/Blu-ray/Dvd/VHS Television), but I'm still optimistic

The meme is in ref to the reviewer not The Abyss. The Abyss is a worthy 4k release.

As much as I hate DNR and AI scrubbing I'm at least appreciative that Jimmy hasn't added blinking Ewoks and CG rocks to The Abyss, for whatever that's worth.
