I'm reading the Cinefex issue dedicated to The Abyss. Miniatures, some shot dry, some wet, in-camera perspective shots, motion control, puppetry, those were the days.

Just got a shipping notice from Target for both The Abyss & True Lies.

Nothing still about the backordered Darkman.

DVD Compare has the running time of the new 4K of the theatrical version at 140:16, whereas the previous DVD ran 145:09. Does this mean the original theatrical end credit sequence - smaller text, faster scroll, in two columns - is back?

I emailed Diabolik over the weekend about the Aliens/Abyss/True Lies 4Ks. This morning (Monday) they responded saying they haven't received them yet, and expected them today (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday, the 12th). They said they would ship out "as soon as they arrive."

Members are reporting other sites are shipping, so it appears to be a Disney Club (retailer) issue and not a studio delay of the title. I too have a order with Disney Club and it's been in "processing" status for a while. Me personally, it will get here when it gets here. I'm fine with waiting when they cost $12 each.

The reviews I trust are basically saying it's a repeat of Titanic which is what I expected.

It's going to be sharp and look "good" but it's not gong to be make people happy that want a pure, filmic experience. AI sharpening is going to be the new DNR I fear. I'd rather have AI than DNR but it's still unnatural and something about it just looks digital and oversharpened.

If you compare it to the DVD release, it's certainly going to be more detailed and higher resolution but they should have just omitted the AI upscaling/sharpening. These movies are for collectors - not casual movie buyers that want the movies to look like they were shot in 2024 on digital cameras.

While I do see the clean break for a second paragraph, I can deal and read it. Unlike some sites that go the other direction and break it up too much or cannot use proper punctuation, and like the AI fudgery on this movie: it's not Hemingway, but better than most alternatives we currently have.

Paragraph issue aside, I didn't have an issue understanding it, so not at all a "salad" IMHO. It's much preferred over all the YouTube vids that, if I watch them at all, I put on 1.5x+ speed to get through all the simplistic, repetitive babble.

Everyone has a different way of assimilating info. Some of us prefer it in prose.

I noticed this ever since the updated digital steam quietly rolled last year and I have been kvetching about it ever since.

The initial TC stream was actually worse in regards to the gamma but the recent updated one seems to improve things by a small margin.

Whereas the SE stream was better in this regard.

There is one shot that I used for comparison between the TC/SE streams and the original blu-ray and that is when Ripley is buckling up in the Power Loader.

The original new 4auxK TC stream was extremely washed out, with the colors appearing anemic whereas with the SE new 4uaxK did not exhibit those elevated washed out qualities.

I wonder if the disc version features the corrected left color grade shots and the slightly improved gamma curve.

It's ironic peeps getting tense about delays/ not getting it on release day. Some of us been waiting since 2006. If I don't get my copy until April, still all good. After this, there's just the original theatrical Star Wars Trilogy.

these two phrases are all i needed:
" relative absence of grain"
"if you're loathe to accept "revisionism" of any kind, this may not be the release for you"

Looks like walmart is the big winner on the preorders. Some people even getting them early.. noted for the future.

Whomever within Walmart saw what Best Buy was doing with no more new media and said "Guys, now is our time to strike and pick up those Best Buy customers going elsehwere" should be given a raise.

Quite true, if they coud have new releases in stores on release day, that would be ideal and less chance of damage too. I am curious if later down the road Best Buy regrets their decision and jumps back into carrying movies again, wishful thinking on my part, nothing more.
