both the VHS and dvd of the abyss came out in March (1990 & 2000).. make sense that it would be March 2024.

That ProRes trailer looks freakin' great. I can't wait to see those colors in full HDR!

Wonder if the UK release of this will be uncut, or if the BBFC will still throw a hissy fit about the treatment of the rat in that scene again.

debatable. they let through most of Cannibal Holocaust's kill scenes through because they were quick (never thought I'd be comparing these films)

however, in this, you do see the rat on screen struggling at first.

"No “T2 4K wax figure look”, super fine grain. True Lies looks similar to the 4K transfers of Star Trek: First Contact, Deep Impact, Star Trek Insurrection and The Truman Show which are all of the same era using Kodak Vision 500T 5279 which are fast stocks designed to reduce grain"

Yeah. Can confirm the ProRes trailer looks much better.

This isn’t going to be a T2 issue. Makes me hopeful Cameron will give that film another look on UHD. It deserves it.

I was at a point were I never expected that this Movie would ever come to blu ray or even 4k. We were all waiting so long for this one and True Lies to hit HD.
For over 20 years there was only the option to get an outdated DVD from 2000, with an non-anamorphic Transfer from the Laserdisc age, or you get lucky and it was on a streaming service for a short time.

I think he means EASTMAN EXR 500T 5296, which I believe is also what The Abyss was shot on. Kodak Vision 500T 5279 wasn't introduced until two years later, in 1996. True Lies came out in 1994, so this is before Vision stock, still in the EXR era.

Default Six James Cameron Blockbusters Rolling Out on 4K for Disc and Digital Purchase

QUOTES

"Six of director James Cameron’s biggest theatrical hits are being re-released in 4K Ultra HD on a transactional basis."

"Three of the films — 1986’s Aliens, 1989’s The Abyss and 1994’s True Lies — will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time ever in collector’s editions March 12, 2024."

"The 4K transfer for each release will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and with an immersive Dolby Atmos audio mix. Additionally, most of the releases will arrive with several hours of all-new bonus features. The 4K UHD physical releases will come on 100GB discs for maximum space and bit rates."

"All six films were originally released by 20th Century Fox, which Disney acquired four years ago, and helmed by Cameron, who in a statement said, “There’s a world of emotions in revisiting these films and I hope we’ve captured some of that in the new bonus materials we created for our fans.”

Oh yes, the Pro Res trailer looks fantastic, actually looks very similar to what I saw on Netflix France a few years ago. So the 4K transfer must have been floating around for a long while.
