Very cool. I'm glad you have the means to play it back in better audio now. btw...check your DM's.

So....in terms of this "fallback" 5.1 track, is this the track that people mentioned in the Titanic thread, and is it also not directly accessible?

Yes, that's the same. There might be a workaround depending on your system, but I'd probably either put up with the faults of the Atmos track or use the lossless 2.0 track rather than trying to access the lossy 5.1 track. Another option would be to remux the lossless 5.1 track from the blu ray.

That’s kind of funny. So if I want, I can hook an optical cable into my player and get the 5.1 track. Could someone quickly summarize the errors? I want to know if this would be worthwhile.

(Basically my TV can accept DTS 5.1, DD 5.1 or PCM 5.1 over HDMI, if I set the player to bitstream then it squirts the lossy backup, if I set to PCM then it decodes the lossless track.)
In this case though, since you're using TV speakers, wouldn't the 2.0 DTS-HD MA track be the better option for you? Or is there a problem with that track as well?

I've been muxing for a long time, and every now and then I see these "extra" tracks which I just ignored because I generally care about either an Atmos track or original stereo/mono. So I have seen them, I just didn't know what they were until now.

Yes, the AC3 encoded fallback track (sometimes called AC3 core) is necessary in the blu ray standard to ensure that TrueHD tracks are playable through old receivers and media players.

1. Directly after the scene where the crew sings "Willin'", there's a repeat of a portion of the song played in the background as Lindsey descends to Deepcore (you can hear the line "and if you give me..." again even though you just heard them singing it a moment before.

2. During the NTI ark rising sequence, immediately following the SE shot where the blinding light hits the crew of Deepcore, the music pitch suddenly changes. It's the SE music cue faded into the end of the TC music cue, and the notes are different. This one for me is the most jarring error. If you toggle to the 2.0 track, you can hear how it should sound, with the SE music note continuing without changing through the next shot of Benthic Explorer.

3. During the added SE shot of the crew looking out over the NTI ark after it's come to the surface, there is a sloppy fade in the music where you hear the same portion of the score repeated twice in quick succession.

Issue 1 was introduced by simply using the TC footage of Lindsey without considering that the added SE scene a moment earlier required a change in the background audio since it created a continuity issue. Issues 2 and 3 were introduced on the old DVD via branching when audio fades were employed to incorporate the additional SE scenes.

Thanks for the heads up. Does this mainly affect the Special Edition of the movie?

Still no delivery date estimate for my Amazon order of this (then again, I pre-ordered on March 11th), but it looks like Walmart online has it in stock with a delivery date of this Saturday, the 23rd. But I'm not sure if that's a valid estimate or just wishful thinking on their part.

Hmmmm....

Maybe they'll fix the soundtrack in the next home video release... in 20 years, or so.

So i received my copy yesterday from WowHd over to the UK and watched the Special Edition in full last night.
Amazing PQ and Atmos sound in my opinion loved it having seen The Abyss many times but not in several years since DVD.

However had like some others have mentioned several issues with the picture freezing and distorting. Cant remember the timestamp however
1. Was as Lindsey gets off the chpper in the early minutes. Doesnt freeze but there is pixilling and heavy distortion on the image for afew seconds, then continues to run fine until
2. The climax of the figh]t between Bud and Coffey, Coffey gets punched and then makes for the submersible. At that point the disc completly freezes in a pixalated state, my 820 panasonic player grinds for afew seonds trying to sort and then skips to the start of the next chapter. Then carries on fine until
3. Lindsey and Bud trapped in the wrecked sub, runs fine until Bud goes to put his helmet on and then same as 2 above, disc freezes and after few seconds jumps to start of next chapter

After that no more issues till the end of the film .This was the special edition but after i checked the TE and does exactly same thing. Checked the disc and there is one small but noticable scratch, otherwise disc is clean.
Very sad, i now face living with it or return and replacement to wowhd in the US urggghhhhhhh

Got it. Ok, so my rule of thumb is going to be the theatrical cut with the new Atmos track, and the Special Edition with either the 2.0 track or the hidden lossy 5.1 track.

Finally received mine. Wow. Pretty amazing that they managed to still capture as much detail as they did and eliminate grain.
