I have the Sony UBX-X700 with the ICOS hardware multregion mod and not had any playback issues with the Abyss UHD or Blu-ray Discs
As I have ICOS mod I can update over internet with Sony official firmware.

Panasonic UB820 is a UHD player that’s known for playback issues especially ones that are using a software firmware multi region hack as the firmware hack it has not been updated in years.

I'm sure you're right, but microfiber cloths just move the gunk around, you need to wash them or use a wipe.

I higly reccomend both. I love Ingrid Bergman. However I do think the 1940 version is criminally underrated.

Clean all of the disc with a dry fiber cloth from center to edge you might need to repeat this a few times and also clean inside the amaray case as the residue can transfer to hub area of case.

The residue can cause various issues in some UHD players it affects some players more than others while some players play discs without issues.

Some of the issues residue causes is video freezing or audio dropouts during playback or menu loading issues

Since I first noticed this over a year ago I now give all new uhd discs I purchase a full clean before using.

There's a thread that has discussed in detail the residue in cases these days. There's really no point in cleaning inside the case because sadly the residue just comes back again after weeks/months. I've seen happen it myself.

I do highly recommend cleaning all blu-rays/UHDs with a microfiber cloth before playing though to remove the residue and dust.

I own a Panasonic UB420 which is the version without Dolby Vision and it plays virtually flawlessly. My Sony x800 was trash and stuttered and froze on everything. From reading the threads my experience with these 2 players is pretty typical (Panasonic good, Sony bad).

Um, any good microfiber cloth will pick up the gunk/grease/residue. How do you think they manage to clean glasses and camera lenses so well? By lifting the oils and crap on the lenses.

I took a look at Orbit and they do ship internationally but they wanted basically the same cost again to ship it to the UK meaning a total cost of $54. I’ll wait I think.

No offence but then your disc is fine, it’s nothing to do with your player. People have had issues with their discs all over this thread since releasing a couple weeks ago if you care to look. Some of those people indicated what player(s) they tried, and yes, some of those were Sony players.

As I mentioned in my original post the disc behaves the same way in the same places on my Sony PS5 as it does on the Panny. I get that you’re trying to be helpful but it’s not fibre cloths or players it’s this release. There are bad encodes out there.

Lucky! I ordered True Lies and The Abyss. Got True Lies the day after it came out.
