More theaters are starting to show up on Fandango. Now the closest is Staten Island.

It's probably not that many, but I at least would have been able to watch a slightly easier to display version rather than a zoomed in laserdisc transfer.
I think I’ve still got the 4:3 DVD also

If so, I think that's all there is about this movie. Excited to buy it the first time on DVD and I don't think I could ever buy it again.

Is there more to this movie other than that?
No, that's it exactly.

Finally happening for real this time. And I will be in the States for a conference for the first 2-1/2 weeks of March so I can actually get this, True Lies, and Aliens all on release date without paying anything for forwarding to me overseas.

This one is a case where I wouldn't mind watching a 4x3 version

It's a unique thing because of the fact Cameron supervised its creation so heavily

The ProRes trailer looks SO much better than the Youtube one. I hope the disc looks the same, or better. I know that's asking a lot though.

That's from the movie, yes, but it's not supposed to be a scary monster movie. It's scifi with a bit of action/thriller, and there's a lot more to the movie than just that.

Since Cameron was coming off from Aliens. I remember him saying that it was not a horror film when promoting the Abyss. That it was a love story.

Hot off the presses…actual note that will come from James Cameron inside the 4K edition:

“In a move which will probably be considered more radical by purists, we are offering the film in both pan&scan Blu-ray and widescreen 4K UHD formats, despite the fact that it is an "ultimate collector’s edition"-type product. I am quite proud of the pan&scan 1080p transfer of the film, and believe it to be superior in many ways to the 4K UHD, due to…reasons. The film was shot in the Super-35 process to allow for improved video transfer, and the result is that the pan&scan transfer does not suffer many of the horrible cropping losses normally associated with a widescreen film. I feel it is the most dramatically involving and effective version of the film, even in the current ultra hi-res video medium. However, for those interested in the original framing and composition as it appeared on the big screen, or who simply don’t enjoy their eyes bleeding during the presentation, the 4K UHD version is offered as well”.

The Abyss (1989) Trailer [35mm] (2K) - YouTube
I adore that trailer. I recreated it from scratch to bring it up to today’s standards. The “behind the scenes” sequences were cleaned manually frame by frame of dust, specks, etc. as was the closing animation. You can find it by searching “Trailer Restoration 10 - The Abyss (1989)” on YouTube.

Say what you want about Cameron's revisionism in other elements, but he is actually respectful towards aspect ratios at least.

he admitted he highly regretted shooting The Terminator and Aliens in 1.85:1 because he hated anamorphic lenses but had no idea super 35 existed, but he never once attempted to try to change the composition or aspect ratio and left it as is, this is one thing I'm thankful for

Yep, it's a great trailer. I thought you had done a restoration, but when I searched for it, the only other one to pop up was someone who did something similar, but had a watermark throughout the whole thing and put a subscribe popup near the end, so I just posted the regular one. Probably could've just checked your channel, lol. Fixed it.

Same here. Bought it back in 2000 when it was originally released (so long ago, I think it was that year?). I remember going to Blockbuster on release day to grab one. Haven't looked at it in probably 10 years so I am not even sure if it will still play.

I find it funny even at the time it was considered sub par

Haven't seen this is decades, remember it being great but a little slow. But I was expecting an action film back then or maybe a horror movie. As an adult I'll love it, and in 4K!
