The Abyss 4K UHD (1989)

And though I think it goes without saying at this point, but this disc looks really really nice despite the AI tomfoolery (unlike the Aliens 4k disc, unfortunately). The only thing I found slightly distracting from the AI enhancement perspective was that in some shots people seemed as if to have outlines, separating them from the background; but fortunately it wasn't enough to pull me out of the movie.

While these are definitely not the worst discs ever, these three go down as possibly the worst releases ever. Limited stock, damaged stock, Target and Amazon royally screwed up, Disney intentionally pressed low quantities (believe me, that was intentional), and JC was once again permitted to play in his sandbox, which resulted in three transfers that are subpar at best.

While there’s a chance of getting legit quality 4Ks after JC croaks, with the bootleg 4K market growing by the day I can see someone doing bootleg 4Ks of all of these films. There are already bootleg Blu-rays that eclipse both True Lies and The Abyss in terms of picture quality, and UHD discs are likely not very far behind. Whoever puts them out can have my money.

To paraphrase Vincent Canby, it’s as if we made a deal with the devil to get these films out there, and now the devil has come around to collect.

Can't speak to True Lies and the Spanish BD (though based on screen shots and comments from trusted members, the UHD sounds like a dumpster fire), but pretty sure there isn't anything close to as good as the Abyss 4k disc.

Finally received my pre-ordered copy of The Abyss. The 4k disc is scratched and the case is cracked.
l will have to wait for True Lies and Aliens to arrive later today to see how many l have to return.

My disk arrived from America. I love the higher resolution but I prefer the colour timing from the streaming HD. The colours are more saturated and less teal. Is the colour timing of the 4K more akin to originally seen in theatres?

Why on Earth is it taking so long to get more stock of this? I know we’re down to one replication plant, it’s banned in the UK, yada yada yada…but it’s coming up on a freaking MONTH since this streeted. I’ve sent THREE discs back to Diabolik for file read errors and skipping / freezing issues. It’s truly getting ridiculous. I want this d*mn release.

My 4K disc is visibly scratched but I was able to make an MKV file of both versions from it — does that mean I shouldn’t have playback issues with the disc?

The one NA replication plant myth has already been debunked. And the UK ban on this title is probably why stock is scarce - there's probably a larger Euro run on it, making copies harder to find here. Are you saying all 3 of your copies were defective? Have you considered there might be an issue with your player? I haven't seen many complaints of freezing from others.

Yes, all three have had the dreaded circular scratches. I’ve verified the same sections are unplayable on my standalone and with attempting to rip the discs to my HD.

I'm about to send my second copy back to DiabolikDVD for file read errors. The first, I just thought maybe it was my computer drive. I also ordered mine from Diabolik very early on in January, but it arrived in a box with 3 other 4K UHD's, they all played flawlessly. The Diabolik website shows that it is out of stock. Not too surprising because Amazon US is out of stock.

I'm still waiting on my replacements from DMC. Spoke to customer service today. Was told they have True Lies in stock and expect to have more copies of The Abyss and Aliens available "in about a week."

Maybe it's because I've had a couple of cans of Stella but that is fookin hilarious. Not noticing Bishop's hole for years is one thing, but not noticing someone WIPING THE FOOKIN LENS is just mad
