Maybe a guy on the set wiped it off and then asked for a few bucks so he could buy some booze. Feeling charitable, Cameron said, "No money, but we'll keep you in the movie." It can happen.

My 4K disc for The Abyss was scratched as well....a really long circular scratch not far from the edge. Both my True Lies and Aliens discs were fine...which is especially amazing for the Aliens 4K disc since it was stacked.

Just shy of a month later, mine finally arrived. I wont be pre-ordering on Amazon anymore. About to watch it.

No scratches. However, the Blu-ray disk was in the section by itself, and the 4K was the disk stacked on top the extras disk. Should have been the other way around since I don't give a rip about the Blu-Ray.

Looks like the sticker on the front wont come off. I tried, SLOWLY, and it was ripping both corners I tried from. I REALLY hate it when they put stickers on the actual cover and not the wrapper.

Add me to the chorus of folks having issues with this one—which is a damn shame as I’ve had such a good run of movie watching the past few days. A little past the 54-minute mark the Special Edition macroblocks to hell on my Panny (and skips several seconds ahead on my OPPO.) I wrote to Orbit as well as BVHE support but am not anticipating a quick replacement on this one, so I took my chances on a disc-only copy for $19.99+ shipping on eBay. Let’s see if my lack of patience works out.

The frustrating thing is that this is clearly a disc issue and not an issue with the Panasonic, which has always been touchy in ways the OPPO isn’t. Le sigh.

Finally got this in yesterday (Amazon US). For the ones that are still waiting, it came with the slip.

Good news: Finally received my Amazon pre-order yesterday. Watched last night. Can't believe I made it to 74 without ever having seen this! Great film and spectacular presentation!

Bad news: Had same problems others have reported - Movie stopped/pixelated twice, paused, then restarted after losing 5-6 seconds. Multiple wipe downs did not help.

Great news - This morning I washed the disc. Warm water, Dawn detergent, careful cleaning from center out, then RINSE, RINSE, RINSE! Can't emphasize RINSING enough! And - SUCCESS!!! Played through first problem spot just fine (couldn't remember where second was but not worried).

I'm glad to have won the battle, but DAMN IT! We should NOT have to deal with this crap at this point in the 21st century! The disc was spotless: no scratches or smudges, yet it was faulty. Good luck to the rest of you, it's worth the effort.

My skip was about that same point. See my post above for what worked for me. Good luck!

[Show spoiler]"The Abyss" (1989) scene, with a glaring distraction - YouTube

It's possible that they were doing a practice run through of the scene and Cameron liked the performance better than the actual take. The only problem was that the camera guy had a hand in it, literally. So... Cameron said f--k it and left the hand in.

My Amazon pre-order finally shipped last Monday, and was "lost in transit". They only gave an option to cancel the order and get a refund, since it currently cannot be ordered.

*weeps*

Wish I could say it worked, but alas! I’ll have a replacement soon enough (Disney is trying to tell me they won’t replace the disc because I bought it from Orbit [my state’s Department of Consumer and Business Services has something to say about that, though] but Orbit has already set me up with a label). Fingers crossed on that one! You’re right—we shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of thing.

If time allows, many would be interested to know how well the discs play back. The title has a bad reputation for skip as well as slip

The sad part is that there was only enough oxygen for one so that wipe was probably the last thing that poor guy did.

Does anyone know whether there has been any official comment regarding the quality of the US Abyss 4K disc pressings discussed by so many on this thread? I had to refund the one I got as it was poor with the freezing and pixelating via different players.

Am sad about it as the picture was great to my eyes, and the extras excellent as well. I still watched and enjoyed everything that wasn’t compromised. I was hoping to avoid getting a foreign cover version from EU or Asia, or whatever… curses UK rating board. Jim or someone even talked about how the Rat lived a full life in the documentary.

My copy played flawlessly (on an XB1), but my copy of Aliens did jump around a bit on a couple of occasions. I’m not really sure what to make of that, and want to give it another run to see if it’s a consistent issue.

A microfiber cloth that works most of the time. I always carefully wipe 4K discs before viewing because I've run across so many glitches, even when there were no obvious scratches or gunk. Didn't work on Abyss, so I resorted to washing the disc as I outlined above. Warm water, Dawn detergent, careful wiping from center out, and VERY THOROUGH rinsing. It worked, as it has several times before, but it shouldn't be necessary!

To clean my discs, I use a pumice scrubber with paint stripper.
Then, dry with a loofah, because it's a sponge.

Although I've done it to dozens of my discs so far, it doesn't seem to make much difference in being able to play the discs properly in any of my machines.

Must be bad luck, I guess.

I like using a heat gun to dry mine off.

I use steel wool to clean my discs. If you're lucky it even removes some of the grain, as well.
