That's why I said "if", as the lossy DD 5.1 embed behind the Atmos is designed to be played automatically if the connected equipment can't handle the Atmos/TrueHD. You can't access it manually thru the disc menu. The only reason I get it is because I don't have any kind of separate sound system, just TV speakers, and if I set the player to bitstream then it knows that the TV can't do lossless Dobly at all, right, but it can do Dobly Digital, so it squirts the 5.1 to the TV instead. Same with Titanic and its errors, Aliens too: the 5.1 backup is fine. (For some reason Pannysonic players appear to be using the 5.1 embed for non-Atmos speaker setups which is why some folks have reported that the TrueHD/Atmos doesn't have the errors on those discs.)

Ah that explains why it still had the errors despite using my headphones, as I have a Sony player and not a Panasonic

I hope the errors on Titanic aren't on the 2.0 track

Saw it before I read your post, but I wished I hadn't...
And I'm not going to delve into pixel peeping (all that much).
To my layman's eyes, the encode on the HDTV caps doesn't look as homogeneously resolved (grain structure) as on the 4K disc, BUT as has already been discussed at length the grain is definitely scrubbed on the 4K and the image definitely looks artificial in parts.
And yet, despite less grain, some caps look actually "better" to me on the 4K:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=41947&i=1&l=1

As was posted before by other members, it's Jimmy Cameron trying to make The Abuse look like Avatore with his new favourite AI toys...

Now I'm going to make me forget this and keep on enjoying my 4K disc!

It takes zero effort to offer us something less crap than what we've been stuck with for the past few years. Imagine if someone was to put in some effort to give us something good!

So, unlike Aliens and True Lies, Abyss turned out great?

It looks like they really phoned in the 1080p bd.

The amount of detail that just suddenly disappears when you switch from the UHD to the bd in some of those comparisons can’t easily be explained by the step down in resolution alone.

Could bad compression have something to do with it? I couldn’t help but notice in their playlist report that the movie takes up less than 40 gigs.

Once again, even a slightly funkedelic uhd with some weird digital tinkering here and there utterly crushes the snot out of the half-baked, gag-inducing dvd. On the basis of the Doctrine of Far Lesser Evils, and considering JC's other disappointing efforts on the format, the lack of a prior blu ray release on this particular title, and a total lack of other options (now and evermore), it's time to call it good. Vaya con dios, muchachos.

Not having a go at you, by any means. And I agree with you, but FWIW I just couldn't resist:

The slight EE of the BD doesn't help either.

Eh...

Probably better, but I wouldn't call it great after having watched it.

This one I wasn't worried about from the previous screencaps as opposed to True Lies, yet I found it to be a distracting and weird watch.

I don't like it very much. I wish the transfer was more organic.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember this much of an uproar (there were some complaints, mind you) when the first TERMINATOR was released on BD with a remastering equally annoying and intrusive that completely falsified the look of the movie for a modernized, "enhanced & improved" (as well as teal-tinted) appearance. Are we getting more discriminating & demanding in the 4K-UHD era? I certainly hope so.

Since it's very unlikely we will ever get a proper remaster of Cameron's earlier works making them look closer to how they did in their theatrical release, I gave up and took advantage of Disney Movie Club's current 60% off to get this and the rest of the batch, as well as both AVATAR spruced-up re-releases. So, hey, at least they were cheap(ish). Silver lining and all that.

I kind of remember quite a lot of complains and that is the reason I've never bought it so far. But 4K UHD is about getting closer to the original film than what BD could ever achieve so I think the rise in complains about inferior quality are not surprising. Also, now physical media is being relegated more and more to purist that want the best, the vast majority of the mass consumer are being put off by the hassle and expense of having players and discs when they can stream at a lower cost.

True Lies I think the 4k is so damn poor that it's worth searching out either the spanish BD or HDTV/D-Theatre rips. It has better older options available than Abyss and the True Lies 4k looks markedly worse than Abyss' 4k does so I don't think it's quite 1-to-1 comparable to be honest.

To me the Spanish BD is just as problematic for different reasons, neither is all that great in all honesty but where the 4K master wins very slightly is the color timing, the original blue blanket pallette being restored
