100%. They're not ungodly offensive to the eyes on the most base of levels like the worst of the AI botch jobs done on top of those masters are, and for example with a fan regrade + syncing the original audio where needed (as in Terminator 1's mono) they can probably be almost ideal if one is willing to go through all that effort. The AI shit is another level of mucked, and cannot possibly be unmucked by even the most talented of enthusiasts/editors.

I'm honestly really bummed the slim hope that the 1080p BDs could be sourced from the lowry masters didn't pan out. I'd absolutely jump at that master of True Lies on disc, imperfect as it is, it's a godsend next to the 4k we got.

I don't think so and if they were trying to sell you a 2K lets say I would take that with a few grains of salt.

As were the lenses (as you and I know).

Today's lenses are tack sharp in comparison. I'm REALLY glad anamorphic made such a huge comeback that Super35 is now the exception, not the rule like it was in the early 2000s. It's just plain odd to me now to see a 2.40 feature shot flat.

Finally caught the caps. Not a total disaster, although frames 4, 7 and 8 - ouch. As an old website once said - 'A good hard orange and tealing.'

Are the new batches fixed? I had one of the pre-order bunch that had a massively messed up disc to the point that I couldn't get through the film :/.

I don't want to buy another one if people are still seeing these issues with new batches.

I finally got my copy from Spain. It could have looked better but it’s watchable at least. I wonder if anyone will do a fanedit type thing where they add grain back and try and undo some of the AI sharpening etc?

I had an interesting thought theory about the film itself.

what if Cameron made the abyss today and not 35 years ago.. would the role of Bud and Lindsey switch places? meaning she would have done the deep dive and Bud had drown?

She saw the aliens before Bud.

All facts. Thanks.
No, it's not Salomon's work. And neither are the Laserdisc and DVD releases. A well done 4K remaster could've properly done his cinematography justice.

Is the Collector's Edition the only version that has the extended edition? It is quite a bit more expensive then the other editions but I am interested in the extended edition.

You can’t undo the AI sharpening. It’s baked in.

They may have meant that they could replace the ugliest looking AI shots with other source material (a scanned film print, a better/older stream or TV or disc source uprezzed to match the other 4k footage from the disc). That type of tweaking was accomplished with various versions of the Star Wars original trilogy fan restorations.

So, we have moved on to bashing The Abyss now, even though it looks great!

Whilst I didn't mind the presentation, and thus have not bothered to chime in on this particular release, I can still see the AI processing and other shenanigans at work. As such, I fully empathize with anyone who is bothered by it.

Titanic and Avatar also have bothersome issues for some people. We are all different, we all see and react to things differently. I'm not sure why you feel the need to keep disparaging people for being critical of something that bothers them

All editions of The Abyss worldwide include both cuts of the film on both the 4K and Blu-ray.

I thought the teal grade was worse than the artificial sharpening personally. Overall though I'm just glad to have the movie in HD on disc.

I think this would have made a lot more money (out of me, at least) if it was a standard transfer without all the weirdness, if it had separate blu and 4k versions and if they made a UK cut. Instead they've released an expensive set that doesn't look great and I might pick up when it's under £20 delivered.
