Yeah. I understand the skepticism still, but though what we saw in that ProRes trailer screencraps is, more of a sneak peek and doesn't represent the 4K with bigger bitrate and HDR on, it still looks pretty decent. It's pretty clean, but there's lot of definition and detail intact and most importantly, NO filterings that damage the picture in any form; and I'm sure grain is there somewhere, just very soft. It's just not the type of grain that's part of the picture, always ever present. And chances are both the HDR and bigger resolution will end up making it a bit more noticeable.

Trust me, I'm the guy with the hugest grain fetish ever, and I do love the look of grain I really do, but some movies are not meant to have that grainy look more than others. Even back when film was only made on that, film, some directors chose themselves if they wanted a lot of grain or not much if at all. And let's not forget we're getting OCN which probably has less grain than 35mm.

Maybe I'm just being too hopeful; I don't have power over some of you guys to decide what you should do or think, but the little we've seen in those ProRes captures gives me ease. Cameron hasn't personally f*cked over any of his movies for release in formats; he's a perfectionist. The T2 affair, once more, was not with this full supervision, and one can only hope, wish, that now that he's done with his 3 own produced movies, that next year he'll get on board trying to fix Terminator and make a edition as complete as these ones. It's wishful thinking, but it's free, and could happen. Did any of you guys ever expect these 3 movies to come to 4K so suddenly and with a bucket full of extras, and Dolby Vision?

Once again, here is what Bill said, and then Adam (who's actually working right now on authoring the discs):

"Exactly. I’m in contact with people who are working with—and have actually seen—all four of the new remasters (Titanic, Abyss, Aliens, and True Lies). I’m assured there is light and organic photochemical grain on all four, with plenty of unblemished fine detail and texturing."

Adam:

"100% Bill. Thank you for explaining the nuances and facts. I tweeted yesterday, ‘True Lies’ matches other films from the era which made it to 4K - Star Trek First Contact/Insurrection and Deep Impact all have very fine stable grain, reflective of the film stock used at the time."

And earlier:

"No “T2 4K wax figure look”, super fine grain. True Lies looks similar to the 4K transfers of Star Trek: First Contact, Deep Impact, Star Trek Insurrection and The Truman Show which are all of the same era using Kodak Vision 500T 5279 which are fast stocks designed to reduce grain"

Even though he supposedly got that film stock tidbit wrong.

Sidney I am completely behind you and your 5 hour old account, I'm so glad you took the time to sign up here/make a 2nd account it was getting out of hand, I will order two copies of each just for you. Cameron is goated.

We get it. T2 is blasphemy. But it’s a real shame that some of you are going to immediately freak at the slightest sign of DNR on his other major releases, and proceed to trash and boycott something you’ve been wanting for literal decades, all because you’ve created this ridiculous standard of perfection essentially nothing will ever be able to reach.

Anyway, I can’t wait to own and watch these beautiful films on 4K.
Gotta love posts like this.

Maybe, some of us care so much about the films that we actually want to see a quality product, as this is likely the LAST time this will ever get a home release. This is it, folks. The ones we've been waiting for. So yeah, some of us want them to be the best they can be.

And I'm not trashing or boycotting anything. I just have a feeling this will not be quite what it should be. Detail isn't everything. Color matters, and so does the look of the film (grain). I don't mind some DNR as all films have DNR applied as part of the grain management, so we'll see. But I already know I'm not loving the color timing.

Definitely would've gone to a screening if it were a Friday or weekend. Can't scrape out 3 hrs after work on a Wednesday

Once again, there’s no supposedly about it. Come on, you’re a film junkie, just the most basic of investigations will turn up the fact that First Contact and True Lies didn’t even use that stock, and that the largely grainless look of Cameron’s daylight photography is down to using a pristine 50 speed stock, not the 500 speed one which is for interiors and night shoots. By all means fight Bunt’s corner but ”nuances and facts” are not his or matey’s strong suit at this moment in time.

Oh I didn't look at the tech details on those films, too lazy but obviously 500T isn't a fast stock by any stretch of the imagination

I just got tickets. I’m kind of ashamed to say that I’ve never seen this before but I’m excited to see it for the first time in theaters (Dolby Cinema to boot).

Um...wut? For motion picture film 500-speed is fast as fook and pretty much the fastest that Kodak offer to this day, I don't think they do the 800-speed emulsions any more.

But hey, that's what Bunt and his ilk trade upon, the ignorance of their audience that they can spout such ill-informed bollox as this and even film nutters like yourself just take it at face value. Fact checking is truly dead. Oh well.

Rolled my eyes at the ME fellow confidently proclaiming that LD picture quality is actually accurate reference for original color timings and that new transfers should be conformed to LD transfers, during that stream BH and co were on yesterday. -Best heard in the background and at double speed.

What a bunch of bunk and silliness. Beyond ridiculous.

There are already twice as many tickets sold at my theater for The Abyss than were sold for Star Trek: TMP DC.

Wait...what? Didn't Bunt just lecture us old hacks on the dangers of using old transfers as reference? I don't disagree but did someone on the same fookin podcast just wildly contradict him?
