During the showing I attended the audience was well engaged and thankfully properly behaved.

No cells, selfies during the film, nor obnoxious outbursts.

Folks enjoyed the film and laughed at the various beats.
Along with applause at the start and end of the film.

It was interesting to hear the different responses of laughter with certain lines amongst certain groups.

For those who may care, the rat taking a crap during the liquid oxygen scene still remains, even after the grain management pass.

The quick shot of the NTI water probe retracting after being cutoff by the door looked a wee bit curious.

[Show spoiler]The purpose of those lines are two/three/fold.

On one level it is supposed to be reflective of the comportment of some 'roughnecks'.

Concurrently, it is all to reinforce the animosity that the whole crew feel in regards to Lindsey's personality and allegiance to Bud.

This is part of Lindsey's character arc, in that she starts from being a self-imposed outsider to ultimately being accepted by the remaining crew towards the latter part of the film after all her actions that earn their respect.
Having been on many crews of workers from logging, metalwork, and others, I have worked with people represented solidly by each character in this movie. Those lines are exactly how they communicate and behave in those environments. It was true back in the 80s and stays true today. B***h is a gendered word that is genderless in its application, even then, but definitely is the baseline for animosity. Keep your X on, don't get your Y in a twist, whatever snaps your Z are all very common dismissal phrases. It not only rings true to the character group, but it's vital to her arc. (as KMFDM noted)

Whether your perception thinks it's cringy today, or thought it was back then, it's no less real. Many people join these working crews and are immediately hit by that shock as well. I've seen quite a few movies that get everything wrong on how groups like this talk, but this isn't one of them.

Based on The Way of Water, the Titanic 4K and Abyss restoration, it seems like his preferred aesthetic these days is ultra clear, sharp and smooth. That's acceptable for new AVATAR sequels, but by trying to apply that treatment to his older projects ... it just means he's ****ing up his classic films

What about all the new stuff from Disney then? That’s on them.

I thought the subject here was only about Disney's restoration of catalogue titles though. In that respect, Disney was great this year. On new stuff though, things are getting dire.

It was visible on the big screen when I saw it last night, though the guy's legs were cut off a bit. A couple of people even laughed, it was so noticeable.

Yep was definitely still visible at the screening! Cameron was apparently not mulling over every frame THAT closely.

Talk about lack of self awareness (borderline inconsiderate).

I still enjoyed the film despite the over processed picture and the non incessant laughter from the guy, but man did those make it hard to enjoy it.
While rare, I have dealt with obnoxious unaware wingnuts like this. Other than IMAX, which I most recently saw Oppenheimer, I now much prefer the home theater presentation. 4K, ATMOS, HDR, and large OLED displays (and even capable 4K projectors) provides a home experience on par with a theater, if not better,. Sad, but true IMHO.

Or maybe he was and just thought that was funny.

Yeah, my audience was pretty engaged, too. Not sure how many had seen it before and how many hadn't, but I think I saw a few teenagers. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it.

For all the criticism Cameron gets for his dialogue (some of it deserved), he does have a knack for creating characters and getting performances that feel "lived-in."

I had an older crowd - mainly late 20's+ and above. No one laughed obnoxiously at every little thing. I hate those type of people - they think they're so cute by acting like tools. If they're gonna purposefully go out there and be pests then just stay home. Social zeroes.

I was worried that folks would laugh at the drowning scene, because that scene had been parodied in South Park many years ago, but no, it went off great. Great scene and intense as hell.

Well just out of curiosity, I pulled out my old letterboxed DVD, and the actual nudity in that shot is cropped out. But it was clearly visible in the theatrical showing.

That would be absolutely hilarious if they reframed it intentionally to make sure that was seen.

I'll keep repeating, the presence of DVD editorial errors somehow getting carried over into this DCP makes me think this wasn't the final version. The LD and original Special Edition didn't have them apparently.

This coming from the guy who has Piranha II: The Spawning on his resumé (regardless of what happened in the edit). Methinks he's lost a little perspective in his climb to the top...
