They're probably a "bandwaggoner". Jump on the popular opinion bandwagon out of principle, except it's not really a popular opinion, just some shortsighted folks dismissing an entire film because they felt it took some artistic liberties. Their loss.

I don't think the 'artistic liberties' are people's problem with Titanic. It's a romance movie with some very high quality special effects and production design. If you loved the Cameron that did Terminator, Aliens, T2 and The Abyss, yeah there's gonna be some mood whiplash for you

There's plenty of well-staged action in Titanic if that's what people were looking for, but it wouldn't have been much of a spectacle if it was just about the ship sinking and nothing else. They were able to achieve that in 1958 with A Night To Remember - an excellent film - but Cameron wasn't going for a straight remake, rightfully (and wisely) so. Cameron also writes strong characters, which is partly what makes his films so relatable and thrilling. All the films you mentioned feature well-defined characters you actually care for - an attribute that gives the films meaning. Who remembers a film they watched last week if it's populated by disagreeable characters? That's what Cameron tried to do - very successfully - with Titanic and why it made so much money.

lol I'm buying this no matter what, even if it includes a James Cameron stool sample.

What are the chances of Cameron bungling this release as badly as he did T2?

My guess is that this should be OK, barring some unnecessary teal colour retiming. I believe the T2 botch job was due to Cameron slapping the DNR’d 3D version on a 2D canvas, which also meant the Director’s Cut was excluded from the 4K.

Here’s hoping The Abyss will be a dedicated UHD version from the ground up, complete with Director’s Cut.

The DVD had both on one disc thanks to seamless branching. I'm not sure it's possible on UHD, though.

This probably isn't too far from the truth. Cameron would decide that he didn't want to look at the current HD transfer again and want to do it right.

I think this is the right answer. A lot of people seem to think Titanic is some sort of chick flick. The fact that the selling point is most often young Winslet and DiCaprio doesn't help that.

That being said, I personally love Titanic just as much as the other Cameron films, because I see his influence in it and I love the fact that he tried something totally new and that overall it works despite its flaws.

As far as we know, the upcoming release is from a brand new 4K scan of the Special Edition (extended/director's cut). We don't know how much DNR but the people who saw the 2K DCP on Wednesday said it looked pretty good.

UHD does have seamless branching, in which case a BD-100 will be adequate for both cuts (not sure why anyone would watch the theatrical though)

I wonder what his excuse is for T2 then?

So, six pages in and the most confirmation of a release is Jim Cameron saying the master is ready but the release is, "out of my hands." Am I reading that right? That's supposed to be a confirmation?

It takes some time for the official confirmation to reach the surface when you are dealing in The Abyss.
